Yorkshire Day August 1st 2021

HI Dave
You might have company on G/TW-003 (but not on CW). Local Andy G6PJZ/P is going there, so long as he gets back from G/NP-002, Mickle Fell. Andy got the necessary permit from the Warcop Army Range to do the activation today.

Sorry, Phil, I’ve just received a Weather-Catastrophe alert for this evening through to midday tomorrow for the whole DL region - landslides are stated not only as possible but as likely, so to enter those areas even after the storms have passed would not be a good thing to do. Talk about unlucky! I hope at least the weather in the UK (and now Spain) is good on Sunday and all taking part bag several S2S contacts.

73 Ed.

Sorry to hear the forecast is so bad in Baveria Ed, on a day today, when so many are out of the hills and mountains. Not worth risking yourself and your gear is such atrocious condx, so I hope some of us can work you from home if you chase instead.

I want one Phil pretty please

Very good Yorkshireman Alan, you should work a few of us tomorrow. Hoping for more late in the day interest from Yorkshire activators and others visiting our County. Showers now forecast so I am taking my golf brolly just in case - more weight to carry :worried: Just cracking open a new Rite in the Rain log book. I filled the last one in June when I was in Wales. The latest ones have an additional back page on, more of an advert, so I am about to remove it. 3 pencils should be sufficient, often a short prencil gets mislaid or drops in between logs in a log pile, not that I will be sat on one of those on Buckden Pike tomorrow!

Back home chasing today, some neighbour just switched an appliance on (not my XYL) nasty QRN for a time then, forget 20m band for now where’s it’s bad. Sounds like an unsuppresed motor, S5 even when in the IPO position is selected on my rig.

PS 5 minutes later - localised QRN gone so back on 20m!

Been shocking down here Phil due to workmen outside laying cables for internet. So hopefully with it being Sunday tomorrow I might be able to hear someone.

Some good news, I’ll be chasing from our club station as OE6XUG! Ultrabeam for 40 and above; KX3 + KPA500, should be interesting. I may have to unplug quickly if a storm comes over. Does anyone know a good Android logging program for chasing?

That could be a bonus Alan - if you don’t mind paying the extra to get full fibre to the premises. The Open Reach contractors came down my 200m long cul-de-sac last year but turned right half way down and gave it to the new estate to the north of us, which was built about 4 years ago. We will be waiting for some years yet for it I reckon… A council run care home less than 100m from me had their own special trench dug from the BT exchange 250m away from them and got their own full fibre connection, council funded. My copper phone line goes in a roundabout way underground to the exchange, distance is less than 500m, it runs at a decent speed, about 30-35 MBPS but I would happily pay a bit more for FTTP if it was available.

All the best., Phil

I just had a scan through the VK Portalog settings (which I use all the time), and I can change to QTHR mode, which should do the job. Shows how long it is since I operated from a fixed station. :cold_sweat:

Hello Matt, have a good look at “VK Portalog”, by vk3zpf. You may find it suitable as it is for Android.

OE6XUG is up and running:

Already got G4OOE/P in the log on 10 and 14 MHz. Also managed VK3CWB on 18MHz; Ultra Beam helping a lot.

Thanks for the thought Phil. Sadly the river defeated me. The combination of bike and shanks pony worked well for the first bit. Sadly I forgot the waders! It was a lovely day too. Typical! I need to either pick a really dry spell or do the southern route next time (I suspect the latter is the more reliable).

Just back from G/TW-003. Met Dave (always nice to put a face to a call sign). Had a few S2S (including Mark on Gummers How which was impressive on 2m. Nice to speak to someone on the right side of the Pennines whilst celebrating Yorkshire day ). Also good to catch MS0TA contributing some Scottish extravagance to this thrifty day

PS it was remiss of me not to also congratulate the Hambleton net. They started the daily net in March last year to keep people in touch during COVID. Today they celebrated their 500th day without any breaks in that time. Congratulations and thanks for keeping us going during the lock downs and social distancing. I know some of the Yorkshire activators today will have worked them.

I think we can say the first ever SOTA Yorkshire Day August 1st celebration was a modest success - most of the operators would probably not have turned themselves out onto the hills without the excuse of “Yorkshire Day”! One operator who activated just one summit in the whole of last year was heard saying it was so enjoyable he’ll be returning to activating as one his mainstram interests! Can’t be bad…

If operators on the seven summits known to be activated can drop me a couple of paragraphs about their Yorkshire Day activation, (QTHR email via QRZ.COM) I’ll do a write up for the August SOTA News being put together at the moment by Jim G0CQK. Photos if you have them very much appreciated.

Hi Friends,

I intended to support Yorkshire Day despite on very bad forecast.
My choice was SP/SS-012 which was on my way back home from SP/SZ region.

Ascent & descent was in terrible rain but on the summit good people build very nice shelter which secured my “dry” activation.

Many thanks to Nick @G4OOE for S2S on 20m CW - this is location from a/m list.
Also Mike @M0NOM chased me on 30m CW from G/LD-050 - it was our first S2S on CW I guess.
I also heard very strong SSB S2S of Mike with Italian station on 20m

I had a great day on G/TW-004 Bishop Wilton Wold with numerous s2s contacts both in Yorkshire and beyond. All I can say is roll on next year and thanks Phil for suggesting the event. Thanks also to Jarek SP9MA for going out in the inclement weather to support the event.

Hopefully, I can be on a summit next year. Here’s my complete chaser log:

I also got VK3CWB and C6AAE in the log on 17m which made a nice bonus. It was raining steadily as I got on the bike and rode home. The first rumbles of thunder told me I had picked a good time to unplug the antennas and call it a day. See you all next year.

I’m definitely interested in a Yorkshire Day event next year if I’m available.

I wish I’d taken my HF vertical and QRP rig with me this weekend, I have an ambition to try QRP by the sea. I live close to Morecambe so one day I should try it.

I celebrated Yorkshire Day in Filey, the Yorkshire Rose was proudly flying in the memorial garden.

The ice cream was an unexpected bonus!

I’m looking forward to reading Phil’s report in the news.

Well I went off and activated TW-003, the spectacular summit of Gisborough moor. Spectacular for its flatness and probably only matched by a summit in Holland.

The day was sunny, windy and compared to recent weeks, rather cold at around 14c.

I arrived in time to catch G6PJZ/ANDY sitting in the small stone shelter. We chatted for a while before he kindly vacated the cairn and offered me the use. This was very kind, as I’d already seen his aerial in situ and was scanning around looking for another suitable operating position.

The stonework of the shelter is useful for providing respite from the prevailing westerly winds but was rather inadequate at preventing the winds coming in off the North Sea that day, so I decided to utilise some spare stone and soon had a better, more sheltered operating position.

O the air I was immediately spotted by the RBN at around 1240z and soon had had a few of the regular chasers in my log. But not one Yorkshireman or summit. Mmmm?

Listening to 14mhz it would appear that many chasers were after the two or three big 10 & 8 pointers in Europe and I could hear them having a busy time deal with their pile-ups. I guess my 1 pointer was too smaller bait for many.

There appeared a distinct lack of any other CW activators operating from Yorkshire hill swhilst I was out. However on QSYing to 7mhz G4OOE/P Nick called me from TW-004, around 45(?) miles further south and another undramatic summit masquerading as a hill. With one exception all the 6 QSOs I got on 7mhz were UK hams.

Another QSY to 10mhz produced another few entries in my log and as I had a family dinner to attend to later, and not wishing to drag any of the chasers away from the big summit pointers I packed up.

1hr 20’ on TW-003 produced 16 QSOs, of which 2 were S2Ss.

Thanks for your report Dave. Most of us had packed up and headed back down the hill like G6PJZ when you started up, and the CW guys like me were getting back to base in the afternoon for our dinners. Thanks for turning out and building on the Yorkshire DAY QSO tally. :+1:
