Anyone else for food orders for the Brookside? I’ll be putting it in tomorrow morning. After that you’re in the lap of the Gods…

Just out of interest Mark, how many are you expecting at the Brookside?
Should be around 12 Andy.
Mark.
Here’s a happy memory G/LD 2019.
Four activators, one peak ….
Jamie, Mark, Paul and Paul
Looking forward to Saturday!!!

I’m getting stuff ready.
817 to drive the 13cms transverter and probably work 2m FM and maybe 70cms. VX-170 for 2m FM. They have the same power plug. Next Alinco DJ-G7 for 23cms FM. Mine was a B grade item. The power switch is dodgy. I leave the radio powered and slide the battery off to turn it off. Slide it back on and the radio boots up. Not today. Amazingly it uses the same DC connector as the 817 and VX-170. Stuff the VX-170 charger into the Alinco and it boots. Nothing on battery. Ponder the issue and think it’s a long time ( 18months? ) since it was last used, maybe the battery is flat. Try to measure volts and there is some but the contacts are greasy. Quick wipe and we’re in business
GPS batteries on charge. Camera on charge. SD card in the camera. Checked all the cables are in the 13cms box. Made sure all the adaptors and longer cables are present and an antenna. Likewise the 23cms box.
Finally topping up assorted LiFePo packs for a hopefully a long day on Saturday and more of the same on Sunday.
WX will be scorchio! Big sunhat and lots of suncreme in the bag ready. Make sure you pack yours!
… was that only 2019 it seems much longer ago - but most things BC (Before Covid) seem to be way in the past… 2019 three summits ( St Sunday, Fairfield and then Seat Sandal ) and 22 points…2023 1 summit (Calfe Heights) 1 point… however I am gradually mopping up the completes and will be accompanied by my daughter (who is doing a foundation level course as part of her D of E) and two spaniels. I also have the camper so won’t have the drive back after the pub and won’t be using the oxymoron “non alcoholic beer”. Finally why Calfe Heights? Well from the car park in Bowness I can get to both the summit and the pub without having to negotiate packed narrow roads on what will be a very busy weekend. I’ll soon have to start negations with the management for a visit to North Wales to get a few more completes and collect some more points! Right off to pack the kit (ahem… last time on Ingleborough forgot the antenna and had VHF handheld only…) and after the leisurely walk in the sun on Saturday hoping for 40, 20, 10, 2 and for the first time in 30+ years 70cm… ( it is getting closer to Andy’s frequencies…). 73 Paul
Go to the Llyn Peninsula whether they are completes or not! Fabulous.
I see that several of you are planning to run 23cm from Northern hills tomorrow. I have a very poor take-off in that direction from home, but may go out portable with my Alinco and see who I can reach (as I did last September).
Is there any advantage to you if I operate from the top of Winter Hill (SP010), or would a contact from anywhere on the moors count the same for you?
Hi Ross, any contact is appreciated on the higher bands, but if you are SOTA compliant (not in a vehicle) on Winter Hill then we can claim our S2S points too.
I will be on until approx midday and hope to be operating one radio on 2m and one monitoring 1297.5 FM
I may get on KST too and try to drum up some contacts.
73 Stuart
Always worth a try. The path from my NP summit (Nine Standard Rigg) to Winter Hill isn’t brilliant. I’m sure it will work on 2m and maybe on 23cms. I’ll have a PCB Yagi on the DJ-G7 which is much better than the rubber duck.
Winter Hill is doable from the higher LD summits, no problems, in fact I’ve been surprised how well handy → handy has worked in the past.
Regards, Mark.
I saw Jamie in the Autumn last year, he was looking great. He’s got a lot thinner, and I’ve gone in the other direction!
Regards, Mark.
Thanks Stuart and Mark, I’ll see if I have time to get up to the top of the hill then. I recall from last September that my receiver was really struggling with all the high-power transmitters up there, but I’ve found an old BPF which I used for FM-ATV, so I’ll try that in-line.
I shall also only be out in the morning and if you’re on around 10am you may catch G4NOY & M0JVW on their morning net too.
I know this site has come up on the reflector before, but http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/panoramas.html has calculated panoramas from the majority of the higher fells in the Lake District and can be both useful for LoS indications and also what you are looking at afar!
Mark.
I think he’s hoping to be back in the UK late August.

I’ll have
2m: 5W SSB/FM into a J pole so only vertical
70cms 5W SSB/FM into 817 rubber duck
70cms 5W FM into DJ-G7 rubber duck
23cms 1W FM into a 3ele PCB Yagi horizontal or vertical
13cms 2W SSb/FM into a double-doble quad horizontal
Hi Andy
Be careful with the traffic around Kirkby Stephen this weekend as the Appleby Horse Fair starts today and runs throughout the weekend.
I won’t be out playing radio on the hills for a while just out from another knee/leg OP, but if anyone has HF with them I will have a listen.
Have a cracking weekend

I’ll be on Gummers How G/LD-050 from about 1000 utc with my SG Labs 23cm transverter and FM HT. I’ll probably take this 8-el Yagi as well in case it’s a struggle with the supplied ‘PCB’ antenna.
I was just looking at that one…
You’re on the left, I’m on the right. The lumps nearer my end are The Howgill Fells. Maybe a bit scratchy.
But we both can see The Old Man, so a reflection is possible. It will be worth trying to see if the reflection works better than direct. Should do, they use L band for RADAR
