G activations in Lockdown

The MT has been alerted to two recent activations of G summits. Whilst recognising the desire to keep up with activating, and indeed the benefit of an extra encouragement to keep exercising, the MT finds taking these activations at face value would leave the activators open to accusations they were not in compliance with English lockdown rules and therefore may bring SOTA into disrepute. We therefore invite the activators in question to justify themselves or to remove their logs.

Tom, it wasnt me but i wouldnt mind to go and activate some summit, specialy ours lockdown will hold till end of march if not longer, and then, with time will come nother restricted time after another one.

I dont have any local summit or even walks as i live in the midle of city so why dont take radio during some small trip for walk??

Well that is what I - and several others have been doing in the Macclesfield area. We go out for our exercise walks from home, and have our handhelds monitoring. I find I usually get 2/3 decent QSOs during say a 10 mile walk. Interestingly, the others are doing exactly the same - walking from their home addresses and carrying a handheld! Because you’re constantly on the move, you’re exercising, and not indulging solely on recreation (like if you set down, set up a mast and antenna etc). In that respect it’s no different to making a mobile phone call while walking.

Longing to be able to return to my local summits to do “proper SOTA” of course, but this will do until then.

In case of no others to talk to within reach of a HH + rubber antenna while walking, you can also try to speak through Peanut. I remember having tried that some months ago during the 1st lockdown while I was walking to hospital for my chemos and it worked great.
Cheers.

The Angling Trust has persuaded the powers to be that to allow 'Angling" to be included in the definition of exercise.

I think if fishing is as sport/exercise , SOTA should be as well. Whot do you think??

Anglers obviously have friends in high places, in fact, some of those people in high places are probably anglers [on their private estates of course]. I don’t think there are many radio amateurs in high places (high office, I mean, not high summits).

Many unfair things are happening during the lockdown, e.g. Boris Johnson can drive 7 miles through 3 London Boroughs and pass by several closer green parks to do his exercise AND have the Home Secretary and the Metropolitan Police Commissioner state that he stayed local whilst other mere morals are being fined by the police for travelling much closer to home.

I think we just have to grin and bear it.

Totaly agree
And i can tell more … By my opinion some of restriction have no sense like stay at home or for local exercise only but if you go to work (some times, some people drive many miles) and meet humdreds of people is ok.

But maybe like you said …

… till we “can”…

Any way stay safe and strong

Yes, SOTA could/should - but that won’t alter the fact that exercise should be local and in England at least Local is defined as within your village, town, or part of city - so it isn’t going to be a ‘get out of gaol’ card or activation!.

Perhaps it is really like a giant game of Mornington Crescent for those in power… Wesminster… Stratford … Barnard Castle ( for Hoove G/NP-024 )… oops that was only acceptable if playing the eyesight rule so I think I’m out…

Seriously with the day job hat on I have had to help deal ( in a very small way ) with the aftermath of Covid. Please stay in and stay safe.

As a consolation prize, 024 is numberwang.

I didn’t know you did numberwang down under. Respect.

Evening all
Well I thought I had struck it lucky last Friday with a work visit planned to Meigle Hill GM/SS-212. After some advice from Andy MMOFMF the plan was to use a 2m handheld on my lunch break whilst walking around the summit but unfortunately due to the recent snowfall I had to abandon the plan.
Managed to get about ž of the way up the track in the Ford Ranger, but being a lone worker I had to turn round for saftey.
Did manage a few nice photos of the surrounding area.

I don’t have much time for exercise due to work and lockdown but I am spoilt being able to travel around the country and see a different scenery each day.
Glencoe tomorrow should be up near Ben Cruachan tomorrow and Inverary in the afternoon.

Keep Safe

Hello Dear Sota Friends,
I Wish You All A Healthy & Happiness In 2021 For Your Families & You.
I Read The Article About Activations During The Lockdown.Unfortunately
My Friends The Same Things Happen & In My Country.
My opinion is Activations During The General Lockdown must Deleted from Database.
If Not From Activators,From MT.The Job Is Job.NOT Go Somewhere For Job/Work And Activate Summit.
I Agree With Tom M1EYP.We therefore invite the activators to remove their logs.

From my window in Hereford I can see four Sota summits and if I were to stand on the roof of my house that number would at least double. S20 remains SOTA silent and although I do not hear CQ SOTA calls anymore I can hear the hills calling on their own frequency. I cannot wait but patience must. Stay safe

Likewise, I can see two from one of my upstairs windows here in south Shropshire. Tempting as it may be to go out for my first ever activation, patience is the name of the game. Chomping at the bit though!

I have only one SOTA summit visible from my shack, namely Winter Hill, to tease me. I think for most of us, this winter’s Bonus Season will be a write-off as I can’t see any meaningful lifting of restrictions before 15 March. It’s a shame as I have 11 2-pointers, plus an easy 4-pointer, potentially 62 activator points, within a couple of hours drive.
In hoping that things improve by the summer, I will try & activate my nearest 2-pointers, ie. the Clwyd Hills etc so to get some points under my belt & hope that come December I will be able to get the Bonus on some of them, at least. I will also try & do the Shropshire Five then. In the meantime, there are also some big hills in Wales to try.
My walking buddy lives close to the Moel Eilio ridge, west of Snowdon, he’s not an amateur, but if I was him I would be within legitimate walking distance of mountains worth 23 points! 73s & stay safe ( my jab next Tuesday…) John G0MHF.
PS-I’m referring to the lockdown situation here in the UK- if you’re not under any restrictions, then good luck- Happy Bonus-ing!
