First, thank you again to everyone who participated in the inaugural Queens of the Mountains event back in June. We were pleased to see YLs activating so many summits, as well as the support and chases from our SOTA guy pals, and most important – everyone having lots of fun!
Kudos to Lorene W6LOR who accomplished 5 of the 6 achievements for the weekend, earning the K1LIZ Memorial Achievement Award. Liz Burns, K1LIZ, received her first amateur radio license in March 2017, upgrading to Extra class by January 2018 with a 100% test score. Though you wouldn’t know it from her QRZ page, Liz was blind. That didn’t stop her from embracing the Summits on the Air (SOTA) program as both an activator and chaser. At one point, she activated 62 summits in just 11 months with her husband Ron NR3E. In November 2020, Liz became a SuperSloth with over 10,000 chaser points. By February 2022, Liz had earned her third Mountain Goat, an outstanding accomplishment for any SOTA participant, let alone to be done within such a short time period, and without the benefit of sight. As Ron proudly said about Liz, she would be the one to say “never get discouraged. There are no real hurdles in life, only those that you imagine. Liz was proof that you can do anything you want, no matter what life hands you.” The Queens of the Mountains K1LIZ Award is given in memory of Liz’s indomitable spirit that inspired so many. We are honored to present this to Lorene for her hard work and devotion to SOTA. Great job and enjoy your margarita in the special glass!
The peak behind Lorene is White Mountain W6/CD-001 that she did by bike this summer-a painting by her friend.
Watch for an upcoming announcement regarding the 2025 Queens of the Mountains…
