Most Wanted

In reply to M1EYP:
Thanks to Tom for info and John GM4ZFZ for the database fix - all missing slots I had I have checked and they are all now filled. I hope it wasn’t too time consuming to sort it out John.

I like the format of those Summit listing pages - it’s very easy to do a quick check of your “most wanted”. I log with Logger32 and have adapted one of the user fields to accommodate the XX-NNN SOTA refs quickly at the time of the QSO. It’s works OK as a record of refs worked but it isn’t really a database as such, that’s why the summits pages are quite important for me.

In reply to G3VQO:

I suspect that the large number of DC, SB and SC summits on the “low number of activations” list is due to their physical distance from “SOTA Central”.

I agree Les, but in the case of the DC’s there is also quite a large physical distance between the summits which makes some form of central base preferable. I’ve had 3 sorties so far and still have the big one to do.

Others are not so easy, such as DC-006 (Carnmenellis) which is guarded by a fabled dragon!

Access now by bridleway, a very short length of farm track and onto the OA land. Easy to activate, so it should be much more popular than it used to be. The Cornish Dragon may not be dead, but has been shackled.

SE-007 (Crowborough)…always with a feeling of unease, but few besides myself have returned for a subsequent try! This is definitely a summit where CW is much easier, as it is not nearly so conspicuous as shouting “CQ SOTA” next to somebody’s garden hedge!

Precisely my view, but there are other locations within the AZ… but who would really want to go back to Crowborough?

The advent of OA land has opened up many summits, for example SB-010 Houseden Hill previously in GOML land. However, summits such as Swinside LD-057 and Upper Park MW-032 will remain rare due their location on private land. I for one do not fancy a backside full of buckshot while operating (presumably Steve INK has Kevlar vest and pants in his wardrobe). I doubt whether Tom can factor this into his calculations!

In reply to G4OIG:

Next week, 22 - 29 Sept Im staying in a caravan park in Brixham, Devon. I will active DC-004, 006, SC-008, 009, 011, 013 for personal uniques. Once Ive done those I may do others if time permits - plus a couple on the journey there & back.
Steve G1INK.

I would like to do Swinside and Upper Park. But don’t know if I dare!

In reply to M1EYP:
don’t for get you need permission to do this summit as its on private land, love to see the photo’s

Here is the overall list - very little difference really - it shows my preference for VHF operation. Also, I don’t class myself as a chaser, particularly since John BVE stopped running 2m.

would be nice to see the next activator’s photo’s, as we know its now changed up on top,

What is the situation now Steve?

In reply to G4OIG:
I am a little surprised at your comment about SB-10, Gerald. When I did that one in November 2005 we parked by the farm at Reedsford and met the farmer who was very friendly, suggesting a suitable place that we could park next to his straw bales. We met him again on the way back down and must have chatted with him for 5 to 10 minutes. The summit certainly appears to be on his land.
73 jim g0cqk

In reply to G0CQK:

I wholly agree that the land belongs to Reedsford Jim. I parked on the left past the farm, leaving my wife reading while I ascended with instructions to move the car if she was asked to since I had not seen anyone on our arrival - no-one bothered her while I was away.

I had previously read in some of the Marhofn reports that access to the hill had hardly been encouraged pre-May 2005 - sections of missing footpath, keep out signs, etc. Maybe there was a change of ownership before your visit or the hill baggers were just making heavy weather of it! Certainly the advent of OA status on the field has removed all obstructions to access, if there had been any.

In reply to M1EYP:

Hi Tom,

Good to work you and Jimmy on SP-015 on Saturday - and it gave me another unique!

Afraid I’m not much of a chaser - my “wanted’s” will do little more than add a bit of background noise, but for what it’s worth here they are:

G/CE - 3,5
G/DC - 1 to 7
G/LD - 1 to 21,23 to 43,45 to 49,51 to 58

G/SB - 1,4,5,6,7,8,10
G/SC - 1 to 10,12,13
G/SE - 1 to 11,13,14,15
G/SP - 2,5,6,7,8,9,11,12,14,17
G/TW - 1,2,3,5
G/WB - 8,11,12,15 to 19,21,22,23

GW/NW - 2,3,4,6,7,8,9,13 to 20,23 to 29,31,32,33,35,36,37,38,40,41,
45 to 50,52 to 58,63 to 71,73,74,75
GW/MW - 2,3,5 to 12,14 to 18,20 to 23,25 to 29,32 to 38

GD/GD - 1,2,4,5

Has everyone who needed to now edited their original list of ‘needs’ now that the region statistics pages in SOTAwatch have been updated?

Swinside is out in front. Accurate crystal ball you have there Steve!

In the following pack, are some summits with nearly 30 activations, so presumably all activated with not many contacts.

More detailed results will follow. In the meantime, more entries would be useful. Particularly from top chasers such as G4JZF, G4SSH, GW0DSP, G4BLH, G4RQJ, 2E0EDX, 2E0HJD, G6LKB et al.

Nice to be put in the frame as a “top chaser” hi.

My most wanted are as follows…

G/CE Complete
G/DC 2,3
GD/GD Complete
G/LD 19,23,45,55,57
G/NP Complete
G/SB 6,10
G/SC 1,3,4
G/SE 6,7,10,11,14
G/SP Complete
G/TW Complete
G/WB 13,14,21,24

GW/NW 33,36,57,60,63,65,68,74
GW/MW 6,7,8,9,12,14,16,20,21,24,28,29,30,34,35,36,37,38,
GW/SW 1,3,6,9,10,13,20,21,27,28,31,36,39

This data may not be a true reflection of the difficulty to chase a summit, because of my short time with sota, some summits have not been activated during the period I have been a sota chaser.

Hope this helps Tom and pupils
