Most Wanted

Attention All Chasers!

As most of you know, I am a high school maths teacher. The SOTA Programme has given me some interesting ways to teach a variety of topics to pupils. For instance, I have used it to teach trigonometry, Pythagoras, speed/distance/time, spreadsheets and hypothesis testing. It has certainly livened up some of these curriculum areas for the pupils, and given them an introduction into the fabulous British outdoors, which many of them have never experienced.

I have some statistics modules coming up, and would like some raw data to work with. This is also to satisfy my own curiosity and interest, and hopefully, the results may be of use/interest to the SOTA community.

If you are willing to contribute, please post on here your ‘Needs’ in terms of chaser uniques. This, for now, is limited to G/GW/GD in order that the distribution of results is meaningful and manageable for the students.

So, which unique summits, do you still need to chase in G/GW/GD?

Many thanks, Tom

I am currently importing from the Database to update the region lists on SOTAwatch - these show your summits activated and chased if you are logged in.

Tom

I will contribute my own data:

Hi Tom

Now that you have defined a format, here is my data -

G/CE: none
G/DC: 5,7
G/LD: 3,7,8,9,11,12,13,14,19,25,26,27,29,31,32,38,39,40,43,46,48,50,51,54,56,57,58

G/SP: 11
G/TW: none
G/WB: 6,7,8,13,14,18,21,23

GW/MW: 5,6,7,20,23,26,29,30,32,35
GW/SW: 5,6,35,40

GD/GD: none

It was an interesting exercise! The large number of “missing” SE summits is a combination of having no 2-metre capability at home (except the 817 in rubber-duck mode), and the relative proximity of the summits making them too close for HF activations.

Hope this is useful.

In reply to M1EYP:

I would love to give you my ‘most wanted’ and would like to know them myself. However, when I go to the Summits page and select a region there are only a handful of summits identified as ‘my chases’. Is there a problem with the database or am I doing something wrong. I dont really fancy the idea of copying out all the summits then crossing off the ones that I have chased which is over 400 now.

Any thoughts?

In reply to M1EYP:

Hi Tom

These are the ones on my most wanted list:

G - LD-057

I hope this is useful.

In reply to GM4CFS:
There does appear to be a problem which I had not noticed until you mentioned it.
Going back through my uniques I see the last that appears as chased in the region table was in April. All however are shown correctly as chased on the summit displayed in its own info page.
Hope that makes sense and will enable someone to track what is wrong,

And Klaus NP-030 is no longer a sota summit.

NP-030 is Lovely Seat or Nice A**e

I think you mean NP-21 Horse Head Moor is no longer valid

Thanks very much for the data everyone - great stuff. Keep it coming, and hopefully we can produce something of interest and maybe of sufficient use to put up on the SOTA website.

A lot more data is needed yet, before meaningful results will emerge, so let’s have your lists of Chasing needs in G/GW/GD.

Tom

In reply to M1EYP:

Hi Tom,

Most interesting study.

I’ll compile my data for you tomorrow. And when all the results are in, please publish the “most wanted” summits - I (and no doubt many others!) would be very glad to plan activations of some of them!

In reply to M1EYP:

Good Morning Tom. If you can get some distance away from me we might make a 40m CW QSO. Here are my want’s according. The SOTA database is inaccurate in parts and shows wanted summits that I have actully chased and logged into the database, I’m not sure if anyone else has found this and if it is known about:
Wants:
G/CE: none
G/DC: 6,7
G/LD: 5,6,19,23,27,36,40,54,55,57
G/NP: 27

A seperate issue but these QSOs below are chased, logged and mostly starred but are not shown under “My Chases” in the database:
LD-042 (G1INK 20/08/07)

This is “off topic” but I wondered if this missing data problem was fixable so that the integrity of the databse could be further improved and whether any other chasers have the same or similar missing data for their activity?

73 and thanks for all the work that goes into the database - please don’t think I am whingeing about it.
