Continuing the discussion from Yorkshire Dales SOTA weekend (Part 1) - #101 by M0LEP.

I’m not sure if I can make it yet and wont know till almost the weekend of the event, the problem then is finding somewhere to stay at such short notice. What I’ve not seen answered is if there is a meet up planned and where that would be? If it’s at the camp ground, do they allow non-campers on site to meet with campers staying there?
There will be a meet up at the campsite on Fri & Sat night, I’ll have a gazebo with me so bring camping chairs. I’m sure we can get a few visitors in, I’m going on Thursday so will check and post.

@G4TGJ and @G4IPB Thanks for the advice. I think I’ll adjust my plans and do The Calf first. Once at The Calf I can do some activating there and see if I want to stay, or move on to Yarlside.
Hopefully speak to you both at the weekend.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend out on the fells and hills. Unfortunately I’m not going to be able to make it this weekend as I think I’ll be burning the candle at both ends and in the middle as well if I were to attend.
I expect this will be nothing less than a total success and will be become an annual event which I would certainly put in my diary for 2027 
I wish you all the best with the weather and look forward to reading the summit activation reports and the stories of heroic revelry of the evening.

I can’t make it now but I hope the wx is good for all of you.
I’m curious how the majority of you will decide if you will continue to activate despite the currently predicted rain and wind on Saturday… or if you’ll decide not to activate? I’m curious where you’ll draw the line.
I certainly have the right kit and experience to tackle bad weather, but for me SOTA is some that should be enjoyable both in walking and talking to others. But I also do understand that feeling of conquering the weather.
So right now I’m on the fence and will make a decision either Friday night or Saturday morning.
But again, I’m just really curious where others draw the line? Thanks

Bit of an aside, but I enjoyed your latest video from GM/SI-093. I liked how you simply extended your beam and slim jim directly from your rucksack while sitting.

Yes, it is dead simple to do. I also do that with an HF antenna where it is difficult to support the pole, or like on Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh, where they don’t like you putting pegs in the ground.
As for the weather, the serious answer is, I’m not driving 287 miles to not play radio, so I’ll pack the FT-3d and a waterproof notepad. It will probably mean a quick activation, but Hey Ho, that may have to do.

Having information helps.
So checking https://mw0pdv.co.uk/sota-weather-tool/ for G/NP-029 is showing that there maybe showers from around midday with a total of 1.5mm of rain over the day so not likely to become a quagmire.
The biggest issue will be the wind.
Fortunately there is a wall on Sharp Haw that could give some shelter, so I still plan to go with the option to review if the weather turns worse than expected while on summit. Will probbaly take extra guying stuff for options with mast/tripod.
Remember, there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.

MWIS tends to be very pessimistic.
The predicted rain levels are not heavy, so shouldn’t be a problem. The weather forecasts often seem to be inaccurate for this region.
Currently I’m not worrying about the weather at all.

I was thinking the same, looks like high likelihood of light rain so not a show stopper just maybe a bit more miserable than hoped for.
I’ve booked accommodation so I’ll still be going out but if it’s horrendous I won’t spend as long on the top and might change the timing a bit.

I’m coming. Almost wasn’t thanks to campervan breakdown but I have another van I can doss in the back of or a tent if the camp site get snooty about that.
My other half doesn’t do tents though so I’ll be on my own this time. I’m planning to stay in the area for a few days before heading to the LMA show at Elvington on Friday.

I have similar issues Dennis - I went to tax our Motorhome this afternoon to leave after work today, and it kindly told me that the MOT run out on May 29th! And wouldn’t let me tax the van! My fault, I know, but these things pass us by.
Fingers crossed it passes MOT at 8:30 in the morning, so we can continue our plans and join in the fun. Only half a day late, but better late than never!

I was going to say that they send you a reminder for the MOT but that’s just for the tax. It’s does seem odd they don’t remind you the MOT is due. But whilst the maximum charge for the test is capped, the government doesn’t make anything from the fee to make it worth their while to remind you.
