Whilst I don’t exactly do much radio at the moment, the rig I would take would be the ft817 as it has ssb etc. If I actually learn morse code then I would probably take the PFR3B kit that I built as an M6 but never used.
My “other” vote is for my Xiegu X5105.
You should probably put the FT817 and FT818 in the same category - they are essentially the same radios.
There is a reason to split them and that is to find out how popular the new FT818 remains now there are so many other choices such as the Xiegu radios, IC 705 and KX2. Some are much more expensive than an 818 and the Xiegu radios are quite a bit cheaper.
Andy,
Because I always like to look at the whole system, it would be interesting to know how the FT-817/-818 users match their antenna to the system impedance.
Possible solutions could be e.g.
- Only use of resonant antennas
- Automatic ATU
- Manual ATU
I know this may clutter your list, but I’d still like to ask

I’m happy to organise a separate antenna poll asking about antennas such as resonant, built in matching (EFHW 1:64 etc.) external ATU, internal ATU etc.
PM me with the list of topics you think would be useful to ask about or go ahead and arrange a poll yourself.
LNR Mountain toppers need his own section
Los LNR Mountain Toppers son diseño de KD1JV y si te fijas está en el 5to puesto.
The LNR company does not have its own development and manufacturing department, so it is only a trading company. The technical brain is still from KD1JV, who sometimes even helps out if a delivery received by LNR still requires rework, hi.
As already mentioned, this list is only about categories of radios.
BTW, The wording KD1JV Kit (any model) should then be changed to KD1JV (any model)?
I started with FT857 and 18Ah lead-gel; switched to 10Ah LiFePO4 (sometimes I still use FT857 + LiFePO4, for easier activations); Bitx20, uBitx, mcHf; lately I went back to uBitx, with some modifications and powered at 16.5V (4 x LiIon 4S2P); I now have a uSDX 1.02, uSDX OLED and QCX mini, tested only in WFF conditions; except for the FT857, all home made, including the boxes on the 3D printer. A Pixie and a Norcal40A are still waiting for field tests.
No pixie category? Perhaps it could be named wretched radios.
I’ve fully qualified a few summits using the pixie.
To bad there’s not a simple “homebrew” category. I have a few other kits I’ve taken to summits, or out camping or portable. My current favorite homebrew kit is my 5watter 40 from kitsandparts
There isn’t a category for “ex-military manpack radios” either.
Yes, we are down in the weeds now…
But there is one specifically for Altoids-style homebrew radios
I always find it interesting what people provide for options in polls like this. They never seen to give the options I would have picked.
I use DIY 20W “mini sw2017” rig.
Previously it was Xiegu G90 but it appeared to be very noisy comparing with rest of my RIGs.
Finally sold out G90 with 30% discount (after a year I lost my hope that Xeigu fix ATU, AGC issues). Personally, noise flour of Xiegu G90 ruins all other good features like panadaper or ATU
Also now building QCX mini for very lightweight setup.
Nor WS19s
Well, Jonathan, G2HFR has used a WS19 on a summit at least once and I’ve used a Clansman RT320 on summits half a dozen times, so it does happen.
I think, in view of the FT817 being top of this poll, that a poll about CW keyers might be useful. I’d be quite surprised if all the CW Ops with FT817’s send everything by hand.
I’ve got a K1EL K12 keyer in a small box to use with mine, I’ve wired it so that I can power it from the FT817’s data socket.
I’d like to mention the FT-891 additionally.
