Where do I find how I obtain points ?

Hello all,

I’m a newbie here but wondered if there is some sort of list as to how and what you get points for ? I’ve had a look around the site but but cannot find anything ( most likely looking in the wrong place !)

Thanks all.

The tl;dr is you get points for qualifying a summit which means getting a minimum 4 QSOs with different stations when you’re on top of a summit.

You get points for chasing a summit, contacting someone else who is on a summit.

Your score for activating and chasing summits are separate from each other.

In both cases the number of points you get depends on the summit. The database tells you how many you get per summit. This site is nice to browse the summits visually.

There are more rules/nuances but that gets you started.

Welcome aboard Brad!

It will all make sense, and is great fun - if rather addictive :grinning:

Not really - but in the world of SOTA they are seen as special…

You can collect summit to summit (S2S) points in their own right, I’m on about 610 S2S points, but that’s a drop in the ocean compared to some activators!
Good luck with SOTA, but beware, it is addictive!

thanks again

Welcome to the addictive world of SOTA!

Noticed you are on QRZ.com and located in the West Midlands.

Titterstone Clee Hill is close and almost a “drive on” summit.

May I suggest you might benefit from a joint activation with someone who is experienced in SOTA activating? It can save some frustration of getting to grips with it all.

There’s a good number of activators in that area who would help out.

If you wanted to travel a bit further I’d meet you. I’m in Mold Flintshire and have some accessible local summits suitable for a good 1st activation expedition.

Edit: for a good view of the summits list you can’t go far wrong looking at SOTLAS

It would be a good idea to read through the General Rules. Click on SOTA Home at the top of this page, then click on Joining In and the rules are accessed by the menu on the left. They are not an easy read but much of it is stuff like defining summits, organising Associations etc, the nuts and bolts of the SOTA organisation, but there is a lot that will help you. Sometimes people come a cropper and lose their points because they had not read the rules! SOTA Home also has articles giving advice for activators and chasers, and the MT Blog has articles on the actual work of identifying valid summits.

I actually live in Shropshire now and am very close to both Brown and Titterstone Clees I can See Brown Clee from my house and can see the radio masts and golfballs on Titterstone if I walk to the opposite end of the field next door to me ( There is a smaller hill between me and it ) , I activated Brown Clee yesterday and will most likely activate Titterstone in the very near future as I often walk my dogs up there. Thanks you everyone for the advise and info.
