What about sharing GPS tracks to the SOTA summits

If we could get a few more activators sharing their GPX tracks after their activations by loading them into the SMP that would be a big help for those of us chasing “Uniques” and doing it is very uncomplicated - unlike the above posting which goes right over my head!

Having said that, thanks to those who do put them in, it is very much appreciated - I have three more tracks to input from a visit to Cornwall and Somerset this week and I’ll be putting them in tonight, a mere 10 minute job.

I was replying to the thread, regarding how the map is used.

I am writing about tracks.

I am writing about features I would like to see.

There were, apparently, only four respondents to the questions about features.

I am in the NASOTA, Montana, Glacier region.

I am interested in a full-featured SOTA Goat app, providing directions from the QTH to the SOTA “summit” for iPod Touch and iPhone here. The QTH is, after all, your location, where you are.

The lat-long may be picked up in SOTA Goat app from your device, or, possibly input manually.

The SOTA Goat app indicates directions to the “summit” from the lat-long QTH is automatic.

I haven’t experienced it, so far, over problems getting registered at NASOTAwatch2 and at the NASOTA Reflector, apparently, which will be overcome soon, I hope.

I really really want this to happen, because The Rocky Mountains and The Continental Divide trails here are not well-maintained. Many peaks have no trails.

I have considerable experience as a mountaineer. I would like to see this kind of accessabity to mountains and summits.

I would also like to participate in SOTA as an “activator”.

Questions and suggestions for the SOTA Goat app are probably best addressed to the author directly.

To give directions from any location, via a recognised trail, to the summit would be a huge undertaking.

Getiing registered on SOTAwatch and the NASOTA reflector is quite straightforward but I am sure that as you have registered here, we could help you.

I look forward to reading about your first activation.

In order to get directions from your home QTH to a trailhead, I use maps.google.com . Choose “directions” then your home QTH then place a lat/long (syntax W xx.xxxx E xx.xxxx) into the “destination” field or click on the map.

If a .gpx file exists for the trail/bushwhack, I load that into my GPS device. If a .gpx file doesn’t exist, there are a number of programs (ExpertGPS, TopoMaps, etc) that you can set waypoints (trailhead/vehicle, junctions, summit at a minimum) and download to your GPS device.

As more Activators upload their ascent track to the summit on the www.sotamaps.org website, these tracks will be available for the next activator. Thanks Rob for this SOTA mapping resource!
