I will be in Kyoto City from October 24 until November 6.
The hope is to get to some summits near Kyoto. There are several that would be completes which would be a thrill to activate. I’ll be signing JJ0XUN. Helen, JJ0XUO, will be joining me on the 28th and I hope to get her on the air, too.
I won’t be renting a car. Taxis and public transport will be our ride.
Any information from people on this reflector who have experience with these summits will be greatly appreciated. Here’s a partial list:
OS-005, 0S-004, OS-018, OS-009, KT-017, KT-014, HG-052, HG-076, HG-063
You can email me directly at n6an@arrl.net.
It would be wonderful to meet up with SOTA activators who live in the area. I also hope to spend time in the CQWW SSB contest this weekend.

Hi David! Regarding the HG´s summits the best one is HG-052 a lot of room and short walk from the parking lot to the summit.
HG-076 no much room and for this reason you must go very early because other hikers. HG-063 nice and easy hiking but surrounded by trees.
OS-005, very nice hiking but many hikers. OS-004 not very popular and sorrounded by trees. OS-018 very short hiking and a lot of room. KT-017 long and nice hiking, nice space. And KT-014 nice hiking but there is a weather radar and depending the band the noise could be terrible.

Mil gracias, Takeo. I look forward to meeting you!

Hi David,
I wish you a very enjoyable trip and good SOTA. I wonder if I could ask you a question about obtaining your Japan callsign?
I visited Osaka/Kyoto and other locations in August this year. I did look at the info Jarl website about obtaining a license but noticed you needed to give a Japanese address on the form. In the end I decided not to progress.
I’m now returning to Japan early next year on holiday and was considering taking my KH1 for some casual operating when time allows.
Do you know what the address is used for on the form? i.e. do you get sent your license in the post or would a hotel address suffice for this piece of information?

You can just tell them to send it to JARL and then they post it to your home address

Hi David,
Welcome to JA.
Enjoy your stay and SOTA in Japan!

Hi Steve,
Check JARL web site
https://www.jarl.org/English/3_Application/A-3.htm
The first thing you need to do is to get a Japanese callsign.
Next, You need to apply for a warranty for KH1 from JARD,
KH1 has NOT 60m band, so the procedure for KH1 is relatively easier than KX2 or KX3.
If you need any help, please let me know.

I am in Kyoto now. But cannot open my email accounts. My phone is not working, either, except for local wifi. Frustrating.
The best way to reach me, for now, is through this reflector.
Hopefully I can resolve my connectivity issues quickly.

Hi David
This is Katsu JP3DGT.
I received a message from Kawauchi(JA1CTV) and sent you an email.
Below is the text of the email I sent.
Thank you for the many S2S.
I don’t understand English so I’m using Google Translate.
Please forgive me if there are some strange parts.
Here is the information about the mountains you listed.
JA/OS-005 Ponponyama Ascent 1:20 Descent 1:10
The summit is narrow, there are many climbers
JA/OS-004 Kounoyama Ascent 0:50 Descent 0:40
The summit is forested and the view is not visible, there are few climbers, and a full-size dipole can be set up.
JA/OS-018 Utagakiyama Ascent 0:15 Descent 0:10
The summit is maintained as a park, but there are many trees and the view is not very visible.
Relatively few climbers, and a dipole can be set up.
JA/OS-009 Kowadayama Ascent 0:50 Descent 0:30
The summit is forested and the view is not visible. There are few climbers, and a dipole can be set up along the trail.
JA/KT-017 Hangokusan Ascent 1:30 Descent 1:05
The summit is wide and has a good view. There are relatively few climbers, and a dipole can be set up.
JA/KT-014 Miyama Ascent 1:00 Descend 0:50
The summit is a shrine plaza. The view is nice. There are a lot of hikers, so it’s best to avoid using a dipole.
JA/HG-052 Ooyasan Ascent 0:10 Descent 0:10
There is an observatory and campsite near the peak, and you can drive right up to the base of the peak.
The peak has been developed as a park, and the views are great.
It’s not large, so a dipole antenna isn’t possible.
(Corresponds to POTA JP-1529)
JA/HG-063 Tenjyobata Ascent 0:30 Descend 0:25
The summit is in the woods. No one climbs the mountain, so it’s possible to set up a dipole.
JA/HG-076 Oofunayama Ascent 1:20 Descend 0:50
The view from the summit is nice, but it’s narrow.
Transportation around this area is not convenient, with buses only running once every two to three hours.
We recommend traveling by car.
If our days off match, we may be able to show you around.
(It’s a small car so it’s narrow.)

That’s an issue I have been strugling with for my SOTA/pilgrimage to JA5 next year. In order to get my KX2 “legalised” for Japan, I have to send it to the factory. Then to get it back to EU, I have to send it to the factory again. I don’t look forward to sending the rig twice across the ocean and run twice the risk it gets stolen or damaged. I ended up getting a KX1 instead (the KH1 is roughly $500 more expensive here in EU after taxes).

So bad! Tell me if you can go by train to Kameoka Station. If you can be there, I could pick you up at approximately 07:30 a.m. and from there go to JA/HG-52
Thanks Hiro,
Having read the link, I can see the “HOLD MY LICENSE AT JARL” and collect in Tokyo option.
Thanks for the extra info on the warranty.

Hello, Takeo.
I cannot go to Kameoka by 7:30. Very sorry. I saw your message too late.
I will try KT-078, Minouragatake, this morning.
73, David
I will be staying up on Tatayama 10/27-10/29. Planning on activating JA/TY-001, TY-005, and maybe TY-002. I selected the JARL address per instructions and then Ken mailed me my license. JL1CIF
Happy SOTA! I brought my Arrow 3 element 70cm Yagi. Should be fun! If you’re going to Tokyo the Rocket Antenna store had Icom ID-50 batteries for about 1/3 the US price. Highly recommend checking them out (although I bought all they had yesterday which was only 2).
Hello, Katsu.
Thank you for your messages. I will try KT-078 this morning.
73, David JJ0XUN
Great! Don’t worry and enjoy the activation!
73!!!Takeo, JP3PPL
Hi David
Sad for not being able to coordinate and meet but very happy because you were able to do an activation!
Thank you for adding today’s S2S in Japan to the many we have done crossing the Ocean!
73, Takeo JP3PPL
Thank you, Takeo. So very sorry to miss meeting you today, but the S2S was great. Glad you could find me.
Do you use WhatsApp? I do. 626-807-8180.

Takeo san:
Thank you for this list. I wonder if you could have a second look at this list and consider access by public trasportation. What is your opinion of good summits in the Kansai area that have access by public transportation?
