Visiting Kyoto City

Hi Paul.
Are you coming to the Kansai region? If so, tell me approximately what date.

My only chance in Kansai is the afternoon and evening of 2 Nov. It is the Europe S2S event so I was thinking of hiking up something late, then activating and coming down with a headlamp. I think the evening will be the best chance for propagation to Europe and since 10 meters has been good lately, I would like to give it a try. I will stay in Himeji Friday and Saturday night 1-2 Nov. I did a couple summits today with 7M4QZE and will be in Tokyo all next week until Friday when I go to Kansai for a couple days.

Hi David

Thank you for S2S today.

If you’re not particular about the mountain you suggested, there are some good mountains near Kyoto.

JA/SI-025 Hieizan/Ohie
You can get up there by ropeway.
The peak is a little far from the tourist spots, so you can take your time.

JA/SI-006 Houraisan
You can also get up here by ropeway.
It’s a ski resort in the winter, but it’s also a resort when there’s no snow.
There’s a stylish cafe too.

Here an easy one! JA/HG-284 Kyoumiyama, from JR ¨HARIMA-KATSUHARA¨ station you have approximately 40 or 50 minutes to the summit and I activated it twice during afternoon/evening.
Take a look at SOTAmapping, I uploaded a track of this summit

It looks like a perfect place for a night time activation. Thank you for the tip.

I forgot to tell you, if you are going to be in Himeji for just one day and you plan to visit something there, I imagine you will want to visit Himeji Castle (World Heritage Site), it is great and worth it. But if you have the opportunity to visit the Shoshazan temple circuit (also there you have SOTA JA/HG-172) you will not regret it. It is practically a place frozen in time and one of its temples also served as a location for the movie “The Last Samurai” (The scene where Tom Cruise is practicing with the katana).
I don’t know if there you can activate in HF but possibly you could do it in V/UHF.

I was checking the JR Line. From Himeji Station you must take the JR Sanyo Line going to the west only for two stations and leave the station Harima-Katsuhara through the north exit.

I activated HG-172 yesterday, thank you for the tip. It was a very interesting place to visit and activate. I found that continuing up the track to the very summit, I found a spot where I was completely alone so setting up an HF antenna didn’t seem inappropriate and I was able to complete the activation. It was a great summit with easy bus access from the Himeji Castle. I skipped the ropeway and just walked up which was also very pleasant. Thanks again for your input.

Nice to know it and specially you were able to find a space to install the station. To tell you the truth I visited there about 12 years ago and I dont remember very well the summit, great news! Maybe my next activation? :grinning:
I hope you are enjoying your stay in Japan
