Trans-Atlantic S2S Event - 4th November 2023 - pre-event chat.

Mmmmm, seems the stars are not aligning properly.
CME, a lot of rain forecasted…

I was thinking on antennas these previous days.
Now I’m thinking how to put a tarp !
I’ll try my best if feasible. Else I will cancel.

K0ATV and I will be 100w with a 20m resonant dipole antenna from Colorado!! And we’re using a tower and two masts to hold the antenna up nice and high… configured north-south to radiate east-west. Can you tell we’re getting excited for the event?

Solar activity had dipped as the less active side of the sun was facing us but is starting to climb as new active areas rotate into view. Meanwhile this afternoon the 28 MHz band is performing nicely, better than in the last sunspot maximum, with lots of strong NA stations roaring in on phone. If the CMEs scheduled to reach us tomorrow are not too disruptive 28MHz seems to be a good bet.

I’ll try and get out on a summit, but depends on the weather.

I’ll give the 20m vertical a go but sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Otherwise it will be 20/15m on a dipole.

If weather holds out I’ll pop up GW/NW-053 with my K2 and doublet. I’ll focus mainly on the high bands, 10m seems in good shape again today.

The Europe to West Coast opening will be a bit later than the East Coast EU opening.

If u can drag your feet a bit before leaving your summit we have TEN Arizona stations on summits tomorrow looking for Europe, starting around 1300 UTC.

Ten Meters looks like it may be the best band…but u never know for sure…

Thanks

Where do people get information about CME arrival? I am still learning how to interpret solar weather and had been getting excited because the SFI is rising.

GM0GAV will be out and focus on 15/12/10m CW. Likely on GM/WS-014. WX not the best and limited daylight, so will be QRT by 1500 UTC.

Looking at the weather even the small walk up Billinge Hill (G/SP-017) is very unlikely. However, we have arranged to go to the antenna testing field (can sit in the car there at least).

As the light fades, might see if we can throw up something for top-band but I wouldn’t expect miracles on our first attempt.

My plan is to set up on W6/CT-228 and be ready around sunrise, 1415Z. I hope to have a half square for 10, possibly 15, and a doublet or two if space is an issue.
The K6ARK 7 element yagi for 10 meters appears to have worked well this evening.

… heavy rain and wind with up to 59 km/h…

The weather during my activation… I’m happy about the shelter in AZ… and a hot shower afterwards

After a ~6-hour car drive my old lower-back pain has returned; it hurts except when lying on my back with my knees up; but I’m determined to go away. Activating sitting, crouching or kneeing is unthinkable. Oddly, walking is alright. Fortunately, the weather forecast is now showing it’s dry until mid afternoon so I can forget the tarp, poles, groundsheet and inflatable mat [lightening my rucksack], and operate standing instead.

I’m switching location to Hutton Roof Crag G/LD-052 where there’s a waist-high rock on which to place the KX2. Erecting the 20/10 EFHW inverted-L on 6m pole will be a ‘challenge’ [to use an overused euphemism] and require care to avoid an attack of pain.

I’ll need to shorten my QRV time, self-alert for a few bands (probably 10m and 15m) and not do any time-consuming search-and-pounce.

73 for the event everybody, Andy

I wish everyone gd dx for the event today. Unfortunatly or fortunatly I am just enroute to EA8/TF during the event and will land to late to be part of the action.
But I am hoping for some dx on 10m during my vacation.
Built a rollup Slim-J-Antenne for 28.3 MHz in addition to my normal setup. Let’s see🤞

Heavy rain and gales are expected in my region. Since there is no shelter on DM/BW-089 it looks like I have to cancel the activation. It’s really a shame with condx like these

Good luck and many DX to everyone,
Roman

Cancelling here also due to just a short window before rain starts and predicted strong and gusty winds during an activation. My perennially bad back doesn’t help either…

Good luck to all those who manage to participate!

Cheers, Rob
