Equally easy on 14MHz at 1606z. However, other activators from W5N, W0C and W7O were heard today at about that same time with much weaker signals compared to just a few days ago.

Hi Friends,
In my log is no S2S with NA so far, I hope it will change during coming weekend
Nice chasing from NA logged on last Sunday are very promising

Maybe I’ll try fitting 17m links in my 20m upper and outer
Just been running the figures for my setup (assuming the upper and outer is acting as a 1/4-wave vertical) through the RSGB EMF calculator, quite gratifying how much power I can run and avoid any exclusion zone issues by remaining low power compliant
Hoping to be out there Saturday!

hello I’ll be there too saturday from 1200 utc in hf cw in i / lo181 … gl S2S

Severe gales / storm force winds now forecast and the probability of rain is inexorably creeping towards 100%.
The only good news is that I still haven’t received my permit from the MOD. Fingers crossed
This looks like being a severe test of my tarpology skills (to say nothing of my will power/common sense!)
Thanks for the info Andy especially about the lack of shelter on the summit and the route.
There is a few 1 pointers along the route home GM/SS-214 and GM/SS-253 that may be more suitable for me, nursing a knee injury at the moment and the Ford Ranger will be ready for collection from the garage ( 2.8 years old 2nd gear box only 135k miles)
Mainly going out for the fun especially for the S2S points, hope I can find a clear freq this time.

… When I spent a large part of Monday Evening waiting for a pick up truck to get hauled home (Caused by a 5p screw in a £200 tyre…) and the subsequent difficulty in locating a replacement (I now have the only one in the UK! ) it seemed likely that this would put an end to Saturday’s plans. As I now have the tyre - but not yet on the wheel on the pick-up I seem to be sorted for transport which deprives me of an excuse.
The forecast for any of the summits seems to be 50 mph gusts, and although I rate my tent pitching skills I’m not sure that I have much that would anchor anything with that wind and in a paradoxical way it is highly likely that the tent will be in the air whilst the antenna remains firmly on the ground. I’ll wait until Saturday to make a decision but I think it will just be sloth points this year…

Southwesterly 35 to 50mph, tending to strengthen through day toward 60mph.
I just looked at the expected HF conditions:
Looks good so far from 1300 UTC onwards for 20m and 17m - hopefully also on Saturday. I just cancelled my orginal plans to use my 20m/17m linked EFHW as with a 6m pole half of the antenna wire would run parallel to the ground at low height (inverted L).
Instead I will use a 5m telescopic vertical whip and a net of radials for low(er) angle radiation over the atlantic.
Hope that the wind and temperature on Saturday will make the stay on the summit not too unpleasant…
I just looked at the alerts in SOTAwatch3. The event on Saturday is already interesting:
Even if it’s not enough for an S2S to NA, I’m still hoping for an S2S with
Guru @EA2IF on EA2/NV-151
and
Ingo @DH5ST on DM/BW-093
for 2 more complete.
And who knows what else will come.

214, Eildon is a bit steep. Not for long but it is steep. 253 Black Hill is brutally steep if you go up the “front”. Not good for iffy knees by any means. But… if you surprise and take from the rear then it’s much easier and is the one I would recommend.
Walk up the drive to the farm and there are signs for walkers. Follow them towards the hill. When you see it you’ll be glad you are not following that path. The left turn is obvious, walk through the woods (if they have not been harvested and do a U turn on to the grassy slopes. Much easier.
Hi Armin,
will be on the air from 60m-10m… In the worst case 60m should do.
Talk to you on Saturday.

It will be a nice pleasure for me making S2S with you, Armin, and anyone, no matter which side of the Pond he/she is at. However, I made a quick activation of Mt. Erreniega EA2/NV-092 today at about Noon in order to check that an intermittent SWR problem I had during my last activation, apparently coming from my unun 9:1, had got fixed after a corrective action I took the following day. This activation lasted a bit less than 30 minutes, but it almost left me sick of cold and this is making me doubt about the convenience of Saturday’s activation for me in my still delicate situation, which will probably be in about the same cold temperatures with an estimated longer time at the summit. Today’s temp at the summit was about 5º C with some wind and overcast with some few drops of rain falling.
I’ll decide on Saturday depending on whether we have sunshine or not, wind or not and the outside temperature, as well as my own strength, warmth and mood, but I may finally decide to participate as a chaser in order to preserve the health of my still too thin and weak poor body.
Today’s summit was a 4 pointer and the one I’m planning to activate this Saturday is a 1 pointer, which is not as high above the sea level as the 4 pointer and the temperature may be a bit less cold, but I don’t think there will be a big difference.
But I still keep a bit of hope for Saturday…

Guru
Thanks for the hint … there is a peak on 15m at 15:00 UTC as well…

Expected temp. at the activating peak here in DL will be 3-5c… similar to your experience Guru. Hoping to have no strong wind.
Some hot tea or coffee will be helpfull.
I don’t dare to think at the temperatures of VE stations activating on Saturday…

Given the weather forecast of storm force winds, I’m now planning on climbng the only hill I know of near Elgin (my ultimate destination) that is tree covered. Hill of the Wangie GM/CS-121
Otherwise, Plan Z will be invoked. No hills, no SOTA, but plenty of
Whilst many have decided to go higher, I have decided to get (only just a fraction) closer and will be activating from Cornwall G/DC-007. I will be experimenting with an OCF 40-6 N9SAB dipole, additional counterpoises for the MP-1, 4 band HyEndFed antenna and my first outing with the Alpkit Rig 7 Tarp setup.
Even if I don’t make any contacts, at least I will have learned what worked and what did not.
Wishing everyone an enjoyable time playing radio.
I’ll be just behind you on G/DC-003.
I’ll wave!
