Trans-Atlantic S2S - 6th November part 2

Plan to be back to the car well before sunset. I always carry a head torch anyhow. Saturday’s weather forecast has taken a turn for the worse though… :cloud_with_rain: :slightly_frowning_face:

Looks rough with 35mph winds on the summits up here. :frowning:

If weather permits (the obvious caveat this time of year)… I’ll be putting up a V beam aimed at Europe.

In my case though, I’ll be hiking in and setting up in the cold dark! Utah is not nice warm Arizona!

I hope I work at least one S2S with someone there!

… a voice said unto me “Its not too bad, it could be much worse…”

… and behold things got worse …

(UKMO Clough Head Cumbria - which is not a SOTA summit but is closest to my planned summit G/LD-037 all be it 200m higher…)

Plan “B” is Cringle Moor G/TW-002 where the forecast is equally windy but dry and thunder free…

I’ll be checking MWIS here in the Lakes from Thursday, not anticipating forecasts here in the Lakes to be accurate more than 3 days in advance.

Cheers, Mark.

Nor indeed anywhere in the UK! Then again the forecast often varies between the BBC, the Met Office and MWIS. In 15 years of SOTA, I’ve learnt not to trust any of them 100%. It will be what it will be. I’m just hoping I can get an adequate shelter erected if it is windy… and let’s hope radio conditions are good to make it all worthwhile. :grinning:

Well they’ve improved the temp forecast by 1deg C for Mickle Fell.

However the rain probability has also increased to 60% and the wind has increased to 30-50 mph!

Gerald, Firstly you have to get to the hills…

However, I have it on good authority that the Bridge of Cally will reopen with temporary concrete barriers in place and a three way traffic light system. It may add a few minutes to your journey about five miles from your destination.

Many thanks for this Fraser. Down here it has not made the news… too much COP26 air time and they haven’t really got started yet! I will keep it under review - it looks like the ground will be rather damp. I may need to invoke Plan B or even Plan C. :hushed:

I’m meeting my wife at her sisters in Elgin after GM/ES-021 Ben Rinnes. Plan Z is to proceed straight to Elgin. :beers::beer::wine_glass:

Yes, travel in Glasgow is a nightmare. And also Edinburgh as I found this morning. Not only trying to make progress with the morning rush hour traffic but there were “polis” everywhere. Not one or two but all junctions had 10+ constables in hi-vis and police vehicles everywhere. I passed a rather posh hotel and the crowds of police and press were quite surprising, obviously some world leaders staying there. I noticed that one police Transit van said Kent Police on the side. So that’s a diesel transit driven 1000miles here and back to police the climate conference. How many more, must be hundreds of vehicles driven the length of the country. Green? Not half!

EDIT: Apparently President Biden was staying at the hotel with the press waiting outside. Hence the three billion police officers hanging about.

I was planning to visit the LD region for this event but will be working in Fife Saturday morning, so will be looking for an easy summit on my way home to activate if time permits.

Hope weather has been booked

I recommend Dungavel Hill GM/SS-165 just off the A73 and A702 Edinburgh road, 11 minutes drive from Abington M74 services, 1km walk (about 50 minutes) starting from cattle grid (marked on OS map) on little road to the west (north of Roberton).

Thanks Andy for the recommendation managed to bag that summit last year, will be travelling home via the A68 and was thinking GM/SS-125 Scald Law.

Scald Law is trivial. There is plenty of parking on the A702 at the start on either side of the road. An excellent track leads to the col with Carnethy Hill and there is a good path that zig-zags up to the summit. It is always busy with locals as it is just a few miles South of the Edinburgh ring road. There’s no real shelter at the top if it is blowing.

An averagely fit hill walker should be able to get to the top in 1hr (age and weather permitting). The easiest route is shown on SOTL.as.

No trace of an Indian Summer or “veranillo de San Martín” over here with temperatures dropping a bit everyday, but, according to today’s forecast, it looks like we won’t have any rain on Saturday, which is great news despite the cold and wind!

I am optimistic for WX in OE but not much participation despite the announcement on the OE ham radio association website:
Transatlantic SOTA Summit-to-Summit Party

Maybe others will join in on short notice.

I expect reasonable weather in the area where I plan to activate. so I’ll be definitely out. In order to maximise my operating time, I will carry both my FT-817 and the FT-891, since with the battery for the 891, I’m pretty much limited to 4 hours. Only a short hike to the parking lot, so I don’t worry about getting to the car in the dark.

I’m on call for work this weekend so won’t be venturing out but hopefully might hear some of you to get chaser points on 20m.

I’m REALLY hoping for DX S2S this year. I’ll be on 14Mhz with 100 watts on a dipole from the time I arrive on summit until about 1500 UTC. Then I’ll switch over to 18MHZ from 1500 UTC through the rest of the morning. I made this decision based on the VOACAP predictions (VOACAP Online for Ham Radio).
