Thanks for this. I had logged in ages ago but updates were brought to my attention.
Sort of Solved… see below.
Hi Manuel, I’m trying to upload photos from my Samsung Galaxy S21. I’ve checked that these photos plot correctly on Google Maps (so they must have location info in the EXIF data, but there is no location data stored in SOTLAS.
I could email the raw file to you if it helps diagnose the problem?
Edit: I’ve got a recollection that this used to work OK, but it may have been on an earlier Samsung phone and will definitely be on an earlier software version.
Thanks for a wonderful tool that I always use before going out on an activation.
Edit:
Partial solution. It looks like it’s Chrome on my phone. It’s apparently started automatically stripping uploaded Location info from photos. I tried it with the Samsung Internet browser app and it works!
This info might be useful

This is caused by a security feature that removes the EXIF data on upload from mobile devices.
It will work if you copy the photos to a pc and upload the pictures from there.
It was working until about 2 years ago. Apparently nothing Manuel can change.

There is a suggestion to fix in the link I posted in my edit above. I have no idea if it is true.
I guess that will allow people to upload any file type.
That’s a huge security risk I guess. Or extra work to make sure that the files are actual pictures.
But let’s see if Manuel has investigated that already.
If god had intended you to use Chrome he wouldn’t have made browsers that work better and that don’t rape your privacy available! Try Brave.
I just added a workaround that omits the accepted file types for Chrome on Android. Testing on an emulated Android 14 phone suggests that this trick works indeed.
iOS has introduced a better solution in recent versions: on the screen where you pick the photos to be uploaded from your library, you can simply choose whether you want the location information to be included.
