Anybody has some news about the SOTA Spotter by @YO3SAW. I read on his website http://yo3saw.ro/ that it is no longer in development. All the other links on his website are not available (at least on my browser):
Hi Martin,
I am seeing the same things on the YO3SAW (dot) RO website - all links appear to have been chopped and bad return codes are being sent. Only the home page appears to still be working.
On Google Play, the App appears to still be there until you try to install it
That is no good news. I hope he is fine. If that is the case let’s hope he makes it open source so others can continue his excellent work.
Would be a shame.
I have used SotaGoat for a few years (apple only). My only disappointment is the inability to see an activators name. There is at least one competing app that shows the name, but I can’t find one that works for apple products. Any help??
Too bad - I have trouble sending spots with the latest version 2.8.625 and was about to send a bug report.
For the links Bogdan seems to have misconfigured the webserver. The links direct to https-pages, but the pages delivered are http. So simply change the protocol to http and the links work: http://yo3saw.ro/?page_id=402#eol
Now I have to look for another app displaying spots and the ability to self-spot easily. Any suggestions?
Hi Andy,
for many use cases I agree: Why a dedicated app, if a website in the browser does the same? But in this case I still see advantages of a dedicated app to the current state of SOTAWatch. SOTAWatch has significantly improved on mobile devices, but it is still lacking some of the advantages SOTASpotter has offered (from high to low priority):
Inputs for spots (Callsign, Reference, Frequency Mode, comment) are not saved for the next spot. Why do I have to enter all these again, if I only want to self spot another frequency?
Clear presentation of spots regarding timestamps: SOTASpotter displays “7 minutes ago” - I get this easier than 14:45. Here I have to check the current time and subtract the timestamps.
Clear presentation of spots regarding summit references: SOTASpotter not only displays the summit points but even has color coding for this. Seeing two possibilities for a S2S I can more easily decide which to work first (normally the higher scored ). In addition the “mouse over” tooltip displaying this does not work well for me with Firefox for Android. I prefer the “extend button” of SOTASpotter.
Audio alerts for special spots, e.g. all DM summits (propably I should use HamAlert for this in future).
Minimized amount of data transferred. If you are sitting on a summit with poor mobile coverage every additional byte is hurting. SOTAWatch always loads the Reflector Latest Topics. I like this on a desktop PC but it really costs time on a mobile device with poor internet access.
Of course this is a very subjective list and I agree, I just got used to some features of SOTASpotter. Many of the topics could also be done with the SOTAWatch website and I would appreciate if these were added in future.
I tried to activate the app on phone xyl. Did that time ago as a backup when I forget my phone hi hi.
Now I see no SMS gateways.
What do you use when no Internet available?
Had a hard time today without spot… Was at FL/VO-021.
73 from Hans in FL/VO?
Hans:
In the remote locations in the Canadian Rockies, SOTAmat has been a great tool for self-spotting sotamat.com. It works flawlessly by sending out an FT8 signal over HF. No more worry about not having any other method of communication other than your HF rig.

With the app SOTA ACTIVATOR you can send your spots only via INTERNET, not via SMS.
When you are sending a spot with the app SOTA ACTIVATOR all the fields are empty. It does not save the entries from the previous spot. So you need to fill out all fields again.
So there is still a lot to do until I would say that SOTA ACTIVATOR works like SOTA SPOTTER. I hope that the app by Bogdan, YO3SAW will continue to work in the future.
