Added to my arsenal yesterday and bought a few more bits to bolster the ever growing vintage 270 CW army!
They don’t know it but this is inadvertently both @GM4LLD and @G4AZS fault.
I ended up getting an MML 144/25 to hopefully give my HT’s and the 290R (when it comes back from the doctors) a bit of a kick up the bum!
Currently reading some archive materials and documentation on how to use it properly while I wait for it to be delivered.
Got a couple of handy older used books on VHF and UHF as well to read through. Trying to learn as much as I can as there is so much more to both than I thought.
Picked up a Pico Keyer Plus, second hand but a decent price versus importing a new one. This will come in handy for the 290R and for some testing with the Quansheng. I want to try a few things with it and different keys.
Got my second vintage morse key, after the 105 year old GPO/BPO one I restored recently. This time I got a key that doesn’t have a very good rep for being a good key, but is important to me for other reasons and since learning about it I’ve been keen to get one.
I managed to get a Bathtub key in good nick and on its original mount. I don’t know the provenance of it, but ive asked the shop if they have any history on it.
Why a Bathtub key? My late grandfather was a Lancaster bomber pilot during WW2. So more of an emotional connection for me wanting one over it being a decent key. I cannot wait to put it back on the air!
Also managed to get a used, but in good nick, official case for my FT290R. A little homecoming gift for it when it returns home from the EI Yaesu Hosptial. ![]()
Lastly, I don’t need any more SWL radios but I saw this for a good price and read up on how good they actually are. Lack of LW doesn’t matter so much, this one has Marine on it and just looks like an absolute UNIT. I love it and cannot wait to have the Sony ICF-5500M on my shelf for when I wfh.
Absolute beast of a radio in my opinion. Here’s a stock image of it if anyone is unfamiliar:

You missed a few Sony ICFs - but hey, nothing can stop you in your fever

After sitting on the shelf for a month after previous attempts to get some rf out of the Uniden 2030 transiever I decided to have another go. One little turn of the Varicap at the back of the radio gave out 10 watts instead of the magic smoke. Now why didn’t I try that before? I think somebody with the twiddling stick had been in there before me.
A 2 meter transiever ready for a SOTA event for old radios (After I’ve changed the xtals and realigned the recieve and transmit part).
I love the inside shot of that radio. If you take a macro shot of the components it looks like a model of a futuristic city!
Not an old radio (its a Quansheng), but I did go out for a trail run this Bank Holiday Monday morning and took a new vintage key out for a spin.
This might be the first time a bathtub from a Lancaster (on its original base) has been used with a Quansheng? ![]()
Lovely key. Tried calling CQ on 2 and 70 but nothing. Wasn’t expecting anything either, just something to do while drinking a flask of coffee for 15 minutes or so.
Lovely key though. I don’t get why some folks say it is hard work, it adjusts really well. This will be used with the FT-290R when it comes back.
