Really unhappy with logging software...

LOTW is already integrated into Log4OM2. I’m uploading regularly. The only annoying thing compared to the previous version is missing location selection on LOTW upload form. I update the locator in TQSL for each activation and I have to go to the Log4OM settings dialog to switch my location between home and SOTA each time I want to upload an activation.

Sorry, that is a misunderstanding - my fault! I know that Log4OM supports LoTW only I don’t have an account there yet. That is pending approval hence I am waiting to make it work with Log4OM.

Searching around Runlog seems a good cheap one to use. I used to use it years ago on my Mac before Maclogger. Only used the OSX versions.

2 months later…
Never heard of Runlog. Logger32 is long established, free so even better than cheap. Needs MS Windows 7 or 10. If you can be bothered to learn it its hard to beat. Used it for over 20 years and it does everyhting I need plus more. Screenshot:

Whilst my logbook shows I am ready to log Joe OE5JFE/P unfortunately I cannot hear him this afternoon on 20m!

Log4OM gets a good rating by other SOTA ops - also free, but I’m too long in the tooth and dyed in the wool with Logger32 to changeover. My DXCC scores would take too long to reconcile I feel with over 105,000 QSOs logged.

I stopped logging some QSOs a while back. But then I’ve been asked for confirmations or e QSLs etc., for QSOs I can no longer recall.

Now that I see your telnet links, I ve never used a cluster. Any pointers to clusters I should follow? (Apart from the new Sota one)

If you are just interested in SOTA then the cluster run by MM0FMF and accessed via telnet is the definitive one. If you are looking for DX on your cluster then you have many to choose from. I use VE7CC-1 and selectively filter out the countries I have already worked on each HF band. If you want to do it the easy way without a CAT connection to your radio and filtered spots to your logbook then try this website: DX Summit

Update: first outing yesterday after 4 months. Nothing strenuous but I tried HamLog on my iPhone. With Decent signal it entered details from QRZ.XML fb. Only real issue is I forgot my glasses. iPad version is quite a bit better but don’t like lugging this around. Exported ADIF and imported okay into Maclogger for Mac OS.

Error auto correct text from Rumlog to Runlog

I’m very happy with paper logging in the field, then transpose into Fast Log Entry. This will run under Wine on Linux if you prefer.

Benefits for me:

  • Minimal typing, and an almost direct correlation between the FLE log file and my notepad
  • Transpose from notepad allows me time to sanity check the log entries
  • Log files are plain text so very easily searchable on whatever computer or OS I have to hand
  • Exports ADIF files that can be uploaded to QRZ
  • Uploads to LOTW
  • SOTA CVS export for SOTA logging
  • eQSL upload
  • I’ve started using a convention when making comments to allow me to categorise that as meta-data in the future if required.

At the moment I am storing the logfiles on my OneDrive as there is now a very lightweight synchronization app for Ubuntu/Debian that you can pull from the standard repo.

Cluster, what cluster? I didn’t know you have a cluster, Andy.

Is it SOTA centric or better still, where can I learn more?

SOTA only. It takes spots from Sotawatch and reformats them so they look like DX cluster spots. A number of SOTA people use it with their logging software such that a spot on the SOTA cluster appears, they double click it and their radio is ready for the chase. Not sure if anyone has antenna rotators synced too.

You can telnet to it (with Putty use raw not telnet) or use netcat. It’s listening on port 7300

nc cluster.sota.org.uk 7300 is what I use on a Linux machine.

xxxxxx@xxxxvpn:~$ nc cluster.sota.org.uk 7300

Hi all,
I use a homemade log. It is only for Android, and I have it installed on the smartphone, it exports to ADIF and you can share the log via email, google drive, etc. , transmit cw and more
I have no problem sending it to whoever wants to try it.

HamLog for iPhone or iPad. The tools alone are worth the price which is very cheap.

Thanks Andy and I’ll check it out more thoroughly when I’m back from my camping /SOTA trip in a week.

Phil,
Let me correct you about reconciling DXCC taking a long time

These days a full download from LOTW will contain ALL of your DXCC results including the Granted status, modern loggers like DXLabs and Log4OM do this for you at the click of a button
