Great news, I have just seen the message from Hans on the QRP Labs Group IO. It look like the SSB firmware for the QMX will land very shortly
See the details here #qmx SSB

Well done
Great news, Hans did a great job to convert his little rig into a perfect mate for SOTA.
Hope the Beta testers give way soon to it and we get the official release.

Thank you Hans, @G0UPL. This is a huge personal sacrifice and a huge gift to the amateur radio community.
It’s in the wild.
This is fantastic news
Good that I ordered one on Sunday and it is already on the way. Before the big rush happens - hi.

Will try to do my first QMX Mixed mode activation this weekend. I’m quite excited!
Me too, I hope to get out on Tuesday to try the QMX SSB. I will be making a new microphone this weekend, from some hopefully better electret microphone cartridge inserts that should arrive tomorrow
Be good to know how you get on with the QMX SSB on your activation.
I can tell you that my tests from the QTH are ok. Some room for improvement of course but our voice will get on the air without problems!
Some hams are already publishing microphone designs and other useful things for the QMX. See this example:
QMX Dual 3.5mm audio connector for speaker/microphone combo by AnthonyWalley - Thingiverse
Good luck on your activation!
Good luck with the build! I found it harder than expected. My first took +10h, the second was about 4h.
I did a quick activation to my local SOTA summit this afternoon, I put together a rough and ready microphone and found my QMX worked very well on SSB, getting good reports.
Amazing little radio for SOTA.

I don’t own a QMX, so I’m going by pictures, but it looks like the main board has a spot for a mic module. It also appears some newer cases have a pre-drilled hole for said mic. There are similar arrangements on the KX2 and TruSDX, allowing you to use both radios on SSB without an external mic. I’ve done this with both and it works well, especially when your normal mic isn’t working.
Have any of you installed a mic module in the QMX yet? If so, what did you use?
Chris
The mic insert came with the original kit, and so should already be in place (mine is). Hans just needs to work a bit more magic to get it configured to his satisfaction…

I tested QMX/ssb today with very basic mic (from PC headset).
Excellent radio !
Thank you Hans @G0UPL

The internal mic is currently used for noise cancellation only, so you need an external mic.
I had pre-built the K6ARK mic kit in anticipation of the upgrade. Hoping to test more today .

Ahh, ok. The pic I saw didn’t show a mic, just the spot for it.
Chris
Interesting. I wasn’t aware of that.
Chris
I tested the beta version 1.01.003 of that SSB firmware today on my QMX on a SOTA activation on HB/BL-005. It really works. I’ve made some SSB contacts and the reports were all ok. Nevertheless, CW contacts are much more easy, with 4…5 Watts. Anyway, it works great and having SSB on this beautiful, small rig is a big advantage! The mic is the printed mic from K6ARK. This one works perfect with the QMX.
@KI4POT there is now a thread on groups.io about the internal mic. It is used for noise cancellation when using an external mic, but can also be used normally as long as you have something plugged in to key the PTT.
Well I finally had chance to get out on one of my local summits, GW/NW-043 to give the QMX a try on SSB.
I was using an EFHW, that as I realised wasn’t tuned for the shorter pole I was using, and so had a not ideal SWR of 2.0 and I didn’t have a tuner with me.
The mic I was using was a modified Yaesu mic that was originally for my FT270
All things considered I was impressed with the performance of this little radio. I had a good run on 20m, and a S2S on 40m with M0JIA on G/LD-017
Unfortunately the rain started getting heavy and so I decided to call it a day before I could give 40m a proper try.
