Today I had time to test the current beta version of the SSB mode. I didn’t change any settings.
Maybe it’s missing a bit of mic gain, but listen for yourself…

The second test was even more impressive. Transmitted with the QMX and heard with the Yaesu FT-817. Mic gain 55, compressor first 3, then 5 and 4 in the end.

Was running out of time yesterday on Wards Stone G/SP-003, as it was a long walk back to the car, but I found a few minutes to plug my old BITX microphone into my QMX, and try for some SSB QSOs on 15m.
I managed 4 SSB QSOs before packing up.

Congrats on your first SSB-QSOs with the QMX!
I like that your microphone is much bigger than your radio

Yes, I have ideas to build a smaller microphone.
The microphone didn’t seem so big with my home brew SSB transceiver!
Good evening everyone. I have bought a small suitable microphone but I am not sure how to wire it up. Plus from the microphone goes to the switch. Ground also goes to the switch and also to the microphone. At which point does the jack socket go? The tip of the jack socket goes to ground.

I made a mistake in my thinking. Now the microphone works. Currently housed in a former surprise egg for testing. And because it looked a bit boring, it was renamed the microminion

Microphone is Ring and Ground
PTT is Tip and Ground
When using and old Yaesu mic, I had to cut some pcb tracks and re wire the PTT switch to Tip and Ground
Thank you Paul @MW0PDV We responded at the same time. It works.

Glad you got it working
I haven’t had my QMX out in a while but I did try to keep a eye on the firmware updates. I tried SSB firmware Beta 3 and it seemed to work fine, I managed 4 SSB QSOs with no issues.
The firmware updates have been coming thick and fast recently and now Hans has released an official firmware version with SSB (non Beta).
Version 1.02.000 is available from the QMX front page -
I’m well behind with the firmware updates, I’ll just jump ahead to the latest version.

Hi Colin.
Good to meet you (and many others) in Blackpool on my first (and only) visit.
I am still running the QMX on SSB Beta 3 with well over 100 QSOs in the log - mostly 40m. I am funking an upgrade as the QMX will be my radio for the forthcoming (next week!) trip to GM and as it works well I don’t feel like meddling. I have not even opened it up to tinker with the toroid windings in the hope of raising the output power.

Nice to meet you for the first time too. You definitely need to try the CW mode on the QMX too.
Good to hear that your QMX is working well. I have so many radios that it can be some time between each power up of a particular radio. I didn’t see the point of updating the QMX firmware as I didn’t foresee me taking that radio out into the field for some time and by that time tje firmware versions would have moved on quite a bit - as has been the case.
I recently celebrated a birthday and I intend to buy another QMX kit with my birthday money. I tried to get to a Hebridean island last year but as I was sat on the ferry to go, an announcement over the tannoy stated that there was an engine electrics related failure. I got off the ferry and got on a different ferry to Mull instead. I’d like to have another attempt at my trip this summer. I took my FT-817 last time, but a QMX would be easier to pack into my bicycle panniers. I need the option of 40m SSB and my current QMX is a 20-10m version.
Good luck with your GM trip and I hope to follow you up there!
