Since I haven’t used my radio since before Covid I thought it was about time to get out!
I have been ill of-and-on since I first caught Covid in 2020, and my health is very up and down still. I’m having a good run atm, and I have been trying to make the most of it with a bit of walking. I got my FT-817 (which I bought during Covid, but have not really used) out of the garage last night, crimped up a RG58 cable, and dug out a 2m dipole and my fishing pole.
I grew up around Church Stretton, so Pole Bank is my home turf. I tried to activate it with a dreaded Baofeng in howling winds some years ago, and only made 2QSOs to some very patient chasers. By then my teeth were chattering too loudly to hear, so I gave up ;). I’d failed previously on Caer Caradoc across the valley. I realised that something locally was overloading the front end of that radio and put it in the back of a drawer, like everyone else.
Pole Bank has another perfect feature for a sickly (and portly) boy like me…it is a very short walk from the car!
There was thick fog on my arrival, with visibility at about 50m. Since getting lost on Pole Bank would be an extraordinary achievement, I soldiered on to the summit. The wind was very slight, thankfully. I set up in a clearing in the heather, about 15 metres from the trig point itself. A nice young couple, who were trying to photograph the horses in the fog, got intrigued by my fishing pole and came over to see what I was doing. I got set up with the dipole about 3m up, spotted myself, and (rather nervously after a long break and a lack of success) called CQ. Boom, instant reply! The nerves settled and the fog cleared.
I soon had my 4 QSOs, including Summit to Summit. The calls were coming in dribs and drabs, so I took the leisurely rag chew approach, apologies to the chap I left waiting for ages! I twice went back to the calling channel and got a station very quickly. 12 QSOs from North Wales coast, West Midlands, North Staffordshire to Stroud. I could have winkled a few more with patience, but the sun was low, and the air was starting to cool.
All in all a great return to SOTA. Thanks to all the chasers. I’m putting together an EFHW so I can dabble in HF soon. I might try some POTA as well.
Any tips on equally easy summits?
