Pic du Thabor - Slow CW Activation

Hi All,

I am off to the Alps again and I am hoping that I can activate Pic du Thabor (F/AB-107), which I’ve just seen has not been activated before! If it happens, it will be in 2-3 weeks time, but I am also hoping that I can do it using slow CW on 40m.

Naturally, I will keep a weather eye on the summit and I’ll let you know if it is going ahead, but this one is for everyone and I would really welcome those operators who are still learning their CW (as am I) - I’m happy to have a QSO at 10-12wpm, so I hope it will help a few people build their confidence.

Here’s hoping for a new summit!

The peaks look quite difficult, but the climbing guides say it has only a brief scramble involved.
Either way, good luck and I’ll keep looking for your alert (CW)

Yes, I’ve read various reports regarding some parts being “challenging” but we’ll see what conditions are like once there. My other concern is there’s not much space for an aerial on the peak(!).

Plan B is to activate a POTA park from nearby Mont Thabor.

Lay it on the rocks and it should work fine when you’re at that altitude.

My concern would be that you’ve announced this to the World, and someone may now beat you to it!

Good luck with the climb and activation. A short vertical wire or even ali express whip with a few radials would work well from there.

LOL! It’s not an easy summit to reach (I’m under no illusions there), and there’s a reason why it hasn’t been activated to date. Let’s see how I get on, it’s a 4-5 hour walk in, and at that altitude, who knows what the weather holds.

Still, I’m up for it and if not this year, maybe next… I’m definitely not going to be taking any undue risks. Fingers crossed :crossed_fingers:

Not an easy summit (it’s not Le Mont Thabor) : helmet and rope welcome. See here : https://www.altituderando.com/Pic-du-Thabor-3207m The end of the season (October) is very cold with negative temperatures and the snow has reappeared (it’s F/AB !) : think about ice axes and crampons …
