Chuck Norris didn’t let the Grim Reaper win, he just took over his job!
I must admit I’d never heard of him before I’d read that he’d snuffed it…
I saw them 1979/80, the 3 piece with Fast Eddie Clarke, Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor and Lemmy. They were supported by Girlschool. I thought Girlschool were quite loud. Then Motorhead came on and I experienced a new level of loud. It was a Friday night and I had my Saturday job the next day in the local computer shop. I couldn’t hear. I couldn’t hear the staff, the customers, the phone ring etc. So I just made people coffee and played Apple II Invaders all day. Took the best part of a week for everything to recover. ![]()
Sarah, Mrs. LLD saw Motorhead at Leeds Uni in 1981/2, supported by Anvil. She left early because it was so loud it was making her dizzy. I just had to cross-check with her, she said I didn’t want to go because I’d seen them and couldn’t hear properly for a week. That seems a surprising level maturity for me aged 19/20!
And you wonder why I have Tinnitus now 45 years later.
Yoof! ![]()
I wish!
Don’t worry John, you’re not the only one. When his passing was announced, the predictable response from my XYL was, “who?”. Of course I hadn’t a clue either.
As for Motorhead, I couldn’t name a member, but my excuse on that one is that it is not my style of music. Not enough notes in a bar for me and a tad heavy too, even though I like certain symphonic metal bands. It’s whatever floats your boat.

Chuck Norris was the only man to count to infinity twice.
Ooh, let me guess, Gerald! Nightwish?
Somehow I missed your reply Brian. Anyway, you’re wrong… I have listened to their music, but it didn’t quite float my coracle.
My personal likes are Ayreon, Epica, Eyes of Eden, Kingfisher Sky, Leaves Eyes, Midnattsol, Stream of Passion and Within Temptation.
One another note, though maybe not directly from Andy’s formulative years, I suspect quite within the scope of his likes…. I was deeply saddened by the passing of Máire Brennan of Clannad this week. Someone special has departed this life.
That’s who had died. I heard the tail-end of something on R4 (FM not DAB or LW) and it was obviously an obituary of a musician and Enya’s name came up. I thought it may have been Enya but there was nothing in the main news bulletins which I’d have expected for Enya. Well now I know who they were talking about.
There was a mention of her passing on the national BBC News noting classics such as The Theme from Harry Game. For me the group were very inventive over their career with many fine songs. I particularly like their album Sirius which is quite heavy in parts… a far cry from their early Irish folk roots.
I had a quick listen over YouTube just now Gerald. Not my music you’re right but there’s the odd bit I recognise from TV theme tunes. It’s not my music but she did have quite an amazing voice, amazingly pure tone. And in those videos you get to see she was also stunningly pretty. 73 was very hardly old but sadly she had a nasty illness, pulmonary fibrosis.
It always happens that like buses, several departures come along at the same time.
Andy Kershaw, broadcaster and radio DJ dies aged 66. Andy Kershaw was 2 years older than me and became the much mentioned ENTS secretary when I was at Leeds University. He was in the student newspaper all the time and did a good job booking all kinds of music acts to play the University including Rory Gallagher, Dire Straits, Stray Cats, ZZ Top etc. He never actually finished his Economics course. As he was fresh faced he was always referred to as “Andy Kershaw (fifteen)” in the student paper. He went on to become a regular broadcaster on assorted radio and TV channels. He was just another student when I met him regularly when I was there. It always amused me that I knew someone famous before they were famous.
Apparently he had been suffering from cancer for some time.
