I used to like the band, a bunch of real musicians, tight and well balanced playing decent arrangements with an occasional touch of real inspiration - but that edgy head voice adopted by Rick Davies affected me like fingerrnails on a blackboard!
Mick Abrahams, founding member and original guitarist of Jethro Tull dies aged 82.
Ah, Jethro Tull. Prog rock? Folk rock? Something rock! They have had just a few different styles and I like many of their varied tunes. From prog rock to just beautiful melodies. I started listening whilst studying A levels and seemed to hang around with people at Uni who were Tull fans too.
Mick was only on 1 album before leaving, their first album āThis Was Jethro Tullā. He was much more blues based than Ian Anderson who wasnāt!
So hereās Mick playing away on a few songs.

I only got my own copy of This Was during COVID lockdown. Before then I always listened to university flatmateās copies. I get transported back to 1981 when I listen to it and it was already 12 years old by then.
ā¦Andy, not seeing any videos, loved Jethro Tull; Merry Xmas to you too

Youtube is playing with how it responds to browsers that have adblockers etc. installed. Iāve tweaked the post so you can see the Youtube link. Cut and paste that into another tab and it should work. Itās misbehaving in Firefox for me now but wasnāt earlier. Working fine in Brave.
Must get it on CD or download as the grooves on my vinyl copy are wearing thin. I must admit I did buy Stand Up, the second album, before I bought This Was. Tull was always played at parties late 60s / early 70s. Very popular amongst my circle of friends.
Although it was sad news to hear, it was good to see Mickās passing got a mention on national TV⦠as indeed did Chris Rea.
His reaction to this is priceless:
I donāt know if this stuff qualifies for this thread, but I like it all the same. ![]()
This one by Charles Earland is a favourite. The track features trumpet legend Lee Morgan who was shot dead by his wife a couple of days after recording this track. A great loss, he was a great trumpet player:
This is one of my all-time time favourite tracks. The only version worth listening to is the extended version though. The bass on this track is phenomenal!
And this track, Pretty Sue by Japanese band Creation, is just a great driving song. The album artwork is disturbing though!
One last one is from his 1982 Guitar Fantasia concert (I have three different editions on Laserdisc it is that good in my opinion), Masayoshi Takanada and the great track Plastic Tears. The whole concert is ace, well worth watching.
This lot should keep you going for now. ![]()
