but I will be restricted

Less is more Jim. Unless more is outrageously more there’s no point not using less.

In reply to 2E0EYP:

There is no need to be limited to 5 Watts. Your dad can carry the batteries and the FT-897. The exercise will do him the World of good and will be excellent training for his summer backpacking activations. I am sure that he will be keen to help.

Hi Richard and Andy,

I am still happy to use 5 watts into my VX-110 into a 3 element SOTA beam on SOTA activations. My Dad M1EYP would not carry the FT-897 in his rucksack and I would not carry the FT-897 in my rucksack either. The FT-897 is too heavy to carry up the SOTA summits. However I will be using 50 watts when I am using the FT-897 in the shack.

Well done Jimmy

In reply to 2E0EYP:

Well done, Jimmy, that’s great.

I hope you decide to continue in due course to the Advanced licence - not for the power, but for the opportunities it gives to learn even more about this great hobby. I’m still learning!

In reply to 2E0EYP:

Well done Jimmy!

I echo the comments about power - it’s nice to be entitled to use high power, but, you don’t have to use high power!

It’s very rare for me to run at my full capability of 5 Watts, I usually run a lot less!

All the best with your advanced studies.

Thank you Karen, John and Colin for your comments. The main reason why I would like a Full licence is not only for high power, but to activate SOTA summits outside the UK.

That’s a good reason!

Well done Jimmy. You managed to get EYP again which was not guarenteed. Just a matter of time now before M0EYP?
Keep studying,
