Mini G/SC Expedition - Day 3

Day 2: Mini G/SC Expedition - Day 2

For my last day in G/SC on this trip I planned to activate the curiously named Wills Neck G/SC-002 in the Quantock Hills. There doesn’t seem to be a consensus over the origin of the name but a local tribe who fought the Romans may be involved.

I was slightly disturbed to see signs as I approached the summit that the road ahead was closed for work on the telephone lines. I ignored them of course and drove on to find no work was happening and the road was open.

The last half kilometre to the car park at Lydeard Hill south east of the summit is very narrow with low hanging branches. I got through and the solar panels were given a good dusting but if anyone else comes this way in a motorhome, park at the junction just before this stretch where there are some suitable gravel areas.

When I left after the the activation I took a different route through Kingston St Mary to Taunton. This was a much better road than the one I used through West Bagborough. I would recommend the Kingston St Mary route for anyone approaching from the M5.

From the car park it is a 2 km walk to the trig point. The advantage of coming from the south east is the car park is only just below the summit so it is an easy walk.

Obligatory trig point photo.

Not obvious in the photo are a lot of cranes and buildings in the distance. I thought it might be Bristol Docks but checking the map it was Hinckley Point where they are building a new nuclear power station. It is a slow project - by the time they finish there is a possibility nuclear fusion might (possibly!) be perfected and it will be obsolete.

I set up the usual equipment.

Finding conditions much better than yesterday I logged 12 QSOs on 30m including two S2S, with @IK2LEY/P on I/LO-178 and @F5MOG/P on FL/VO-011.

A change to 20m SSB brought in another 10 QSOs including another S2S with @F4IYY/P on F/AM-665.

I then gave 2m FM a try and got one contact with 2W0VEY.

Switching to 20m FT4 then 17m and 10m FT8 brought in another 11 QSOs. I could see lots of stations in South America on 10m but my 10W was not enough to reach them today.

I had brought 6m and 10m delta loops but not the coax cable I needed to use them so they stayed in their bag.

A successful activation which without being planned as one was a 4 modes activation, CW, SSB, FM and Digital.

Huge thanks to everyone for all the QSOs.

Looking at the PSK Reporter maps this evening revealed how critical the selection of band is.

This is 17m FT8.

This is 10m FT8.

Basically, 17m was for NA and 10m for SA!

I enjoyed reading all 3 reports John. It’s a long time since I activated these summits, all of which I enjoyed. Unbelieveably it is even longer since I chased Will’s Neck… 2006 indeed. I need to bag some more contacts for the WWFF area, so maybe a return to SC-002 could be on the cards.

Gerald, thank you. I liked Wills Neck, it has a very good take off to the west and south and I might return and give it another go with a QRO setup with the aim of reaching over to SA or NA. It could be done with QRP in good conditions but a few extra watts will help.

The Quantocks are a POTA site so I have submitted my log to them today. I didn’t get enough QSOs for a WWFF activation but if I return I should be able to get a few more to make up the total of 44 needed.

It’s 8 years this August since I did the same summits. I’d been down at Sarah’s mum’s for her 80th birthday. Then I had a couple of days based in Minehead. To this day I hear the name Minehead and I think of Smiley Miley and the Radio 1 Roadshow from the 70s. The hills are nothing really to climb but the whole area is very pretty and just a nice place to be and to walk. I was able to work Don G0RQL on 2m FM from Dunkery Beacon instead of SSB.

Well I managed to work Don on 23cm from Dunkery using 280mW of FM to a handheld 15 over 15 yagi - it was too windy to put on the pole with the other antennas. I activated that one after High Willhays G/DC-001 in February 2008. Will’s Neck was one of six summits on a loooooong day in October 2008. Like John, I think it’s a super summit. Might be worth checking out for a Trans-Atlantic S2S event, though maybe a bit flat. The western edge of the AZ looks reasonable.

Footnote: I was thinking about Dunkery and recalled getting back to my car to find it blocked in, the car park being rammed full. A bit of cross country over rough ground got me on my way. Not bad for an old Audi A6. I remember several people standing gawping. :joy:
