Kirkby Moor Late Afternoon

I spent the day activating a couple of Wainwrights on the Air that had remained unactivated since 2013. Weather cut my day short in the Dunnerdale Horseshoe. Whilst driving back I dedided the legs could take one more summit, so I parked up on the main road below Kirkby Moor G/LD-049 and took a fairly direct route to the top.

Many of the folk who had been following me on my WOTA excursion provided a contact. The air clarity was superb that afforded some great views both out into Morecambe Bay and back towards the Southern Lakeland Fells. You are able to get up close to the Wind Turbines which was quite exhilerating with the strong winds today! You also get to see the Burlington Slate mine, altogether a fascinating site.

My first QSO was with Andrew M7JHB mobile between Ingleton and Kirkby Stephen. After that I must have hit the C4FM button on the FT1XD - Douggie @G7CDA realised this and came back in the same mode, and then so did Andrew who was somewhat clearer now as his FTM-400D switched automatically to digital voice. I recorded a distance of 22.1 miles between us.

I then switched back to FM (I’ll admit I had mostly forgotten how to do this) and had a number of other QSOs before I was cut short chatting to Nick @G0HIK when the battery died - I hadn’t charged it previously so no surprises.

Unbelievably my first activation, I suspect I’ll be back!

What super photos Mark. It was a brilliant idea to stop off to do one more and what a visual experience you had. I love the light conditions when the weather is good in the late afternoon.

As for rig controls, I always find myself relearning the three that I use for SOTA. Even the 817 needs a bit of a refresher course before I take it out. Obviously I need to get out more.

Your report puzzled me at first:-

“Kirby Moor ? - The only one I know is Kirbymoorside on our moors. Never knew there was a Kirby Moor over your side. Something to learn everyday.

Brilliant photos Mark.

PS keep up the morse :slightly_smiling_face:
