Is there any Shelter at Pole Bank Long Mynd ?

Hello all,

I visit Titterstone Clee fairly often but when I have played radio from there I have had to shelter from the wind by either going just off summit or using the Cairn near the summit. With this in mind I was wondering if there was any shelter at Pole Bank on the Long Mynd G/WB-005

Thanks all Brad

No shelter on the summit. Best you can do is tuck in the lee.

Hi Brad,

There is no shelter at the trig point on Longmynd. Also, it is popular with walkers and mountain bikers, so the trig point is best avoided except for a quick hand held activation (or at unpopular times eg after dark).
There is an area just North West of the trig which is inside the AZ, but not owned by National Trust (who have byelaws about erecting poles etc and can be pedantic at popular times). It gives a bit of shelter from some wind directions, but is still quite exposed. It shows up on the OS map, I’ll see if I can find an image to post

Here is an earlier discussion with an image:

Its a nice hill to walk, good luck!

There is a sunken trackway south of the trig point and well within the AZ, IIRC its marked on the map. This gives some shelter.

There is also a minor track heading SE from the summit with parking spot at the bottom - the parking spot is actually only a couple of metres below the AZ at SO 41755 94298

On the Strava running app, this path down to the little parking spot is a “segment” (you can “virtually” race against others who have done the same segment) and it’s named “Roll your socks up mon” which always makes me laugh and is quite accurate as the path is basically a rut with thick heather on each side. Personally I think this is the quickest way to get to the summit from a parking spot.

In case anyone was wondering, the record from summit to parking is currently 45 seconds (since 2023)!

Yep, agree. I sit just SE of the summit, off the main grassed area, in this little narrow path. I’ve done this to get out of a cold wind and drizzle. I tend to be handholding a 6m pole with a 2m slim jim and a 5W hand-held.

Thank you all for the info, much appreciated. I am not a great distance from the Long Mynd so can hopefully activate it on a good day. I did go past it a couple of weeks ago in order to get to the Glider station but as I was with Mrs M0PAB I didn’t walk up to the trig point
I will probably activate with a handheld radio first time round but may use the location or nearby for the next 433alive advent.
Thanks Carolyn for the photo as they say a photo speaks a thousand words !

Thanks again all

There are some low spots (I wouldn’t go as far as calling them bomb holes or craters) dotted around the activation zone which can give some shelter depending on the wind direction.

A good location for it and i know long mynd to billinge hill (probably my location) is possible.

Sunday 24th august is looking like the probable date but will confirm properly when its been decided.

With long mynd, the activation zone is huge so can just bed down on the leeward side to get out of the wind. Only rain will cause much discomfort.

Planning to be there myself on the 14th june (hog roast weekend) with as much gear as the weather allows. Will operate from the northern end of the activation zone to stay out of the rangers influence.

Thanks for the reply Ian, I was keen on trying this hill because of the lack of coms equipment up there, my poor old Baofeng RX fell apart on 2 meters on both Brown Clee and Titterstone Clee which are the only two Hills i have activated so far.

I just thought
to make life easier. Link for parking spot at the closest approach. At the bottom of the small track through the heather that leads to the summit.
