GM/ES Winter Activity Day - Friday 7 February 2025 (Part 1)

In just over a weeks time, a few interpid GM/ES Activators, along with a couple of associate members, will be out on the hills near Braemar. See SOTAWatch3 for alerts. We plan on meeting up at The Bothy in Braemar for a late lunch at 2pm.

There should be at least five summits activated. A good chance for local summit to summits if anyone fancies it! Maybe some of the GM/SS folks fancy getting up high somewhere?

Good luck Fraser :crossed_fingers:

ES-026 by GM5OLD got me as the new one, but will be QRV for all our friendly Scots

I hope the weather is favourable - or at least not too unfavourable! Sometimes the Highlands weather defeats the strongest of us. I’ve marked the calendar and will listen for any 40m SSB that wafts my way.

I saw the “mass” alert for next Friday in GM/ES.
I’ll try and chase if possible and see if I can get up a summit to do it.
A bit of transport/calendar juggling required for me.

I’m just wondering if Fraser et al. have taken control of the Geostorm satellite network and thus can control the WX!!

Interesting though so let’s see if I can remain working part-time next week and the WX is good enough to take part. Either in GM/ES or at least some with a good “view” of those summits.

EDIT: Hey, GM/ES-067 Craig Ghiubhais has not been taken. I thought that would go first

Ohhh I have a TOIL day in the bank from work! If the weather looks ok I may head out and join you. Done most hills around there except GM/ES-026 - joining up with Tim! Or perhaps GM/ES-019

Just busy dusting off my passport and retraining myself for the poor weather, haggis and oats for the trip up north

Very welcome to join or happy to maximise summits and pick another Corbett ! Lots left :mount_fuji:

Weather permitting I’ll be up something in the North Pennines - so hopefully a 40m S2S - or even 2m if there is a big lift! Paul

Happy to take 2m SSB if that helps Paul.

Thanks Fraser, but I haven’t really got a very effective 2m SSB station (My home-brew 5 ele yagi is electrically good, but mechanically is prone to disassemble itself in a slight breeze) - so 2m SSB might be something for later in 2025. Ironic really as when I first started SOTA 2m SSB was what I was aiming for on most summits…

Here’s what we have so far.

I know @MM0RFN and @GM4JXP are also considering activations.

Well I’m considering wandering up as far as Braemar if the WX looks very jolly. Or a good way North up the A9 / A93 if the WX looks quite jolly. Maybe just into Perthshire if it will be OK and somewhere down here if it’s dry but miserable.

I’m contemplating Arthur’s seat if I can get permission sorted out or Allermuir.
Neither are Winter bonus , but Arthur’s seat would be a complete and unique for me and maybe Fraser since I chased him there.
I was thinking of a second outing for my minimal footprint HF antenna which I used from a ledge on Stac Pollaidh last year.
I have another outing in the afternoon ( Engineers and beers) so it has to be fairly close to home.

I’ve been itching to get out on the local hills since our return from EA8/TF a few days ago, would 11:30 be a good time to “scale” GD/GD-001 with my HF/VHF gear next Friday?

Yes please.

Do we get an award for it -

Early indications of decent (well, survivable) weather later this week. The forecast below is for GM/CS-060 Morrone, the 860m hill that sits above Braemar.

Might be a bit icy underfoot though.

Anyone else planning on hitting the hills on Friday?

You cropped out the “feels like”

Here’s hoping the forecast stays the same though.
