Well there’s no point going out in horrible weather and having a challenging and miserable day! We’ll keep a watching brief on the forecast and select a good day at short notice. Even though 27th looks like it’s going to be awful on today’s forecasts, my prediction is that will be a good day by the time it comes around.
I could very well be wrong on this, handicapped as I am by knowing virtually nothing about meteorology. It’s just the mathematician in me thinks he has noticed a pattern/trend with forecasts from about a week ahead - but let’s see!
I thought 12th November was short notice
Anyway I’ll keep an eye on posts and try to get out somewhere if family commitments don’t get in the way.
Merry Christmas all.
The good weather shows no sign of drifting yet. At present, 28th has a decent forecast, in contrast to 27th which looks nasty. So 28th currently looking favourite, but we will continue to monitor!
My activation of Long Mynd is in doubt for the 30th since Peter is working I wouldn’t be able to take the full setup for a full days shenanigans. However, if the weather is exceptional (clear and dry) I might still make the (reasonably long drive) for a smaller activation. Any indication of wetness or winds would probably mean I would stay indoors.
Shame, I’m not in the position of being able to do weekday activations, even at christmas, but someone has to ensure the food supply keeps flowing
Hi Jimmy,
I would very much like to join you for, especially the visit to the bakery. My plans are rather fluid so I am unable to commit at this stage. In the meantime, have a good Christmas.
No worries Kevin, hopefully you’ll be able to take part in Gaulfest and meet up at Mr Bun The Baker afterwards.
It will be good to meet up with a number at SOTA people at Mr Bun The Baker on the Gaulfest day which at the moment is Thursday 28th December. Please can you let is know on here if you are planning to meet up at The Bun The Baker so that we know on the day that there will definitely be people there to meet up with.
Hi Jimmy, I probably won’t make it on Thursday, we have family arriving that day. Wednesday would have been better for me, but I agree that the weather forecast is not conducive to activating…
Sorry Jimmy another bail out as the weather isn’t really up to make it worthwhile to take the camper down as it seems to be fairly horrible before and after. If it isn’t too windy I might try Great Knoutberry for a S2S but at the moment it is forecasting snow which makes the access road really challenging … The weather models are changing quite a bit so that may well change nearer the time, in the meantime have a really good Christmas. 73. It is hard tracking the weather for a week ahead! Thursday 28th is still currently looking to be a decent day in the Shropshire Hills, but Saturday 30th is looking even better - and being weekend might offer more opportunity for participation?
Saying that, if the wx patterns shift backwards in time as I have noticed previously, it could end up being 27th after all.
Sorry @M0HGY Jimmy, I’m unable to make the 28th December, it’s a special date for us personally, so won’t be about. I am then over to GI on the 29th, so will be mainly travelling that day. I’m hoping to get out on the 27th to do Creigiau Gleision, this all depends on the wx, but at present it looks pretty rough! I hope you and everyone that attends has a good time.
I’m continuing to watch the shifting wx forecast carefully! Thursday 28th or Friday 29th looking most likely, with Friday edging it at present. Saturday 30th now not looking as good. Tomorrow (Wednesday 27th) looks hideous so at least we can now be sure it’s NOT then!
It’s a glorious day today, blue sky and no clouds. Bit icy on the ground and quite cool, the ice on my car windows parked out of the sun on the North side of the house hasn’t melted and the sun’s behind the trees and other houses now, going dark already. I did think of going out for an activation but ended take the time-share hound for an 8km walk and got back to a fabulous cold meat salad (ham, turkey, duck and some pigs-in-blankets). I need another walk now. Snow predicted for tonight but very heavy rain for all day tomorrow
I’ll keep an eye out on here what day we go for. My aim is to activate Pole Bank as it is the last of the Super Five that I have to activate. Planning VHF only if anyone fancies joining me for a joint activation
WX forecast for both tomorrow (Thursday 28th December) and Saturday 30th December look awful. However, the wx forecast for Friday 29th December is looking good so therefore Gaulfest definitely won’t be happening tomorrow, but will most likely happen on Friday 29th December, but I will confirm this tomorrow for definite. Assuming Gaulfest happens on Friday 29th December, we are planning to meet at Mr Bun The Baker in Church Stretton at 3:30pm, please can you let us know if you will be planning to join the meet up at Mr Bun The Baker.
We can confirm that Gaulfest is happening tomorrow, Friday 29th December 2023. The weather forecast has deteriorated somewhat, but there looks to be good clear periods in the morning, and later afternoon. There may need to be an extended period of sitting out heavy showers in a car park (hopefully I’ve made it to Pole Bank by then) around lunchtime. (Which suits me as I want to do a band of Band II broadcast DXing from a point with a VHF take-off towards Birmingham anyway!)
See you on the air for S2S action, and in Mr Bun The Bakers, Church Stretton, for a brew, cake, warm-up and natter from 3.30pm.
Although Gaulfest is going ahead tomorrow, I am thinking about bailing out of this myself due to the wx forecast not being good and also because there hasn’t really been interest for a meet up at Mr Bun The Baker in Church Stretton to happen tomorrow. My dad Tom @M1EYP is still going out tomorrow though for Gaulfest.
