G/DC-001 CW Activation Video

I operated from G/DC-001 on 19 February 2023 and this is a short video of the activation. It is mostly CW but I have tried to present it in a way which beginners like me might find interesting. I’ve used the sound recording program Audacity to show the CW in a visual form.

At about 9:30 it changes to FM which will be easier for non-CW operators. Experienced CW operators may prefer this section too.

Nice video John, and interesting for me to hear my morse from ‘the other end’ for the first time! I felt a bit nervous listening to myself, a bit like when you know you’re about to hear a recording of your voice!

Thanks again for the S2S last Sunday. It was great to get you in the log, and listening to our QSO took me back to an enjoyable activation on a sunny but chilly Black Mountain! I’m already suffering SOTA withdrawal symptoms since last weekend.

73 John, and looking forward to our next S2S!

Interesting possibly but breaking the link between the dots and dashes represented on screen and the sound of each character is important when you are learning.

The best bit is you calling “G?” and a DL responds because… well because !

HI John

That’s a really good clear recording - how did you get it so clear? Through the mic in your phone or by a direct wired connection? Sounds to me like you are listening through a fairly wide filter, maybe the standard SSB filter bandwidth - so the QRM is greater than it would be if you were listening through a 500 Hz or less bandwidth filter. Well done on making this recording - its a good resource for anyone considering advancing their Morse skills by operating in CW from a summit.

The IC-705 can record directly to an SD card. I have it recording all the time - it has proved useful when I come to check a callsign on QRZ and it doesn’t recognise it! I can then go back and listen to it again. It also records the band and mode and the start time of the recording so you can also work out the time of a QSO if you forget to log it.

There are 3 filters which you can select on the touch screen, I usually listen on the narrowest but I can’t remember now what the setting was - something else I forgot to do. But the 30m band was noisy, in complete contrast to 40m which was virtually silent.

Thanks for the info. That’s a useful feature, the SD card for recording on the IC-705, very effective. When you QSYd to 40m in the video it’s very noticable that you were then using a much tighter filter.

Excellent video - I love the fact you manage to put the morse on the video too. I wouldn’t have the faintest clue how to do that.

You did very well considering you had so many chasers. The ones you picked out were the most ‘obvious’ ones too = I’d have done the same.

Just a couple of minor points:-
GW3YQW - Chris ; replied with …“R also 599”

Did you notice you had a HB9AFI/P calling in the background?

TU is the abbreviation for Thank You - maybe you made a typo? - you typed, 'To you" I think.

Anyway I think you did a splendid job and an excellent video.

Dave,

Thank you - I am still learning the abbreviations! Not so long ago I was being thrown by calls starting with DE and I was thinking they were the beginning of a German or Danish callsign. I’ve learned to recognise the DE for what is now of course but some other stuff it still a bit opaque.

I did manage a S2S with Kurt HB9AFI/P later in the activation but didn’t include it in the video as it was a bit drawn out and it wasn’t a total success. Checking his log later he didn’t put me down as on a summit. I think this was because there were a lot of people calling over him at times and I don’t think he heard the reference when I sent it at the end.
