I won’t bother asking “why?”, one man’s useless information is another man’s goldmine. Instead I suggest that you use the contact the MT feature on the website and describe what you want to one of the database acolytes, who will know whether they can devise the tool that you need without spending so long on the project that other DB work would be compromised. Its well above my pay grade!
I’d like to get this badge too. There are two summits in Australia that are below 200m, coincidently both are186 m ASL. The closest one is 385 km drive so it will have to be part of a weekend or longer road trip. The other one is 3358 km drive across three states. I doubt I’ll ever get the pair
The point distribution system itself has been discussed countless times, and I’m not sure you can talk about equity for a small bonus, available once in a life, when at the same time, being a ham today in DM/ BM or such, allow you to just chain 10 point summits like eating candy, while in other parts of the world, they would barely be 1 pointer.
As for a bonus for the first activation, I would say yes and no. Yes, because if a summit has not been activated yet, it probably is not easy. And no, because it could encourage people to take unnecessary risks.
Maybe a small bonus, like double points, could be a nice motivation, but not enough to promote reckless behavior. That said, I also think that being the first is already a reward in itself.
I totally agree. I started in SOTA in 2006 and at that time there were plenty of summits in Scotland that were unactivated. I’ve bagged a few “first activated” in my time and the database records that fact. That, along with my memories is entirely sufficient. I certainly would not have wanted to have earned any points for being the first.
Ditto. I started much later than you, but managed to enjoy getting a few of the remaining GM summits. Just happy for the memories and personal satisfaction.
I’m not sure there’s a particular skill or achievement in being a first activation other than a bit of cudos. I got two in Scotland, both 1 pointers and they were easy but out of the way up country roads followed by a walk. Hardly a big deal.
Perhaps we should get extra for only using CW or VHF/UHF or activations using skis - or a horse (which has been done) or a bike Or perhaps by ascending a summit by a recognised climbing route such as the Ledge route on Ben Nevis etc
