Following the RHB announcement last year which I previously mentioned about on this thread ( UK Marilyn Changes ), I would just like to confirm that after 1st March 2026, Cliffe Hill G/SE-014 will no longer be a valid SOTA summit due to this hill now no longer being a Marilyn.
Been there, done that, got the mark from the injury caused by the golf ball to prove it! (Joke).
Thanks the for the info Jimmy, another one bites the dust. What a shame.
G/SE-014 Cliffe Hill QRV 1610z
The summit lies on Lewes Golf Course. A public right of way passes nearby. Fortunately I chose a time when all the golfers were at the 19th hole, as I arrived at the 9th hole at 1600z just as the daylight was starting to go… I drove up Week Lane as it is shown on the 1:25K map and parked in a wide section at TQ 448107. From there it took 20 minutes to walk to the summit.

HF band conditions were poor now compared to around lunchtime. On 30m and 20m CW I struggled to make myself heard and made just 10 QSOs in CW before I packed up and headed west to SE-006 Ditchling Beacon.
I would like to apologise for any recent confusion caused from the above posts in this thread. I would just like to confirm that Cliffe Hill G/SE-014 will remain a valid SOTA summit till 31st May 2026.
Whoever is the 100th activator - a very well done! If I wasn’t at the other end of the country, I’d be there myself. Not sure I can justify the 600+ mile round trip - I’m sure the planet wouldn’t forgive me at my car!
For me it’s 925 mile round trip and if you add in some driving about then it will easily be 1000 miles. That works at about £150 for diesel (pre-Iran attack prices). It also means 925 miles of motorway driving (M74,M6,M1,M25,M23,A23) and, to be honest, I can’t face that kind of driving any more. Apart from fuel there’s wear and tear on my car and worse, 1/15th of the tyre life would be used (Y-rated tyres made from butter )
But… with an “old-giffer” Rail Card and advance ticket prices the price from Edinburgh to Brighton becomes £95. Now I could use buses etc. to get about. But car hire prices have become sensible again after massive spike in costs during COVID and aftermath. 3 days Fiesta size hire is about £120. I’d need a hotel/b&b, meals etc. whether I drive down or get the train so the cost for that doesn’t matter. So whilst it’s some considerable cost, I’d get a new region, 5 or so uniques, a summit which will be deleted and a chance to visit part of the UK I haven’t been in for nearly 40 years. And there’s always the chance of meeting up with some Southern SOTA dudes/dudettes. It starts to look like it would be a jolly jape.
Should be able to get a train to Lewes, and then it’s just a matter of walking to Cliffe, but of course your plan would allow a few other G/SE hills to be added to the list.
