AX-1 Clone

Oh cripes I dunno about that! I think I am sending faster than I should be, then make mistakes. Still, all good fun and we’re all of us out there giving it socks!

I don’t have the telescopic antenna so just ordered this, two of 'em for €9.99 arriving tomorrow:

I have the enamel wire but possibly the wrong gauge. Either way, will get this built asap and try it out.

I built a @K6ARK 40m mini coil for my KH1 not so long back which worked well but needs a rebuild as the slider wiring wasnt the best so it wouldn’t glue the housing down very well. I might use epoxy for that.

Great work once again sir!

Good luck. And don’t expect miracles! :joy:

George @M1GEO, did you find that putting the heat shrink over the coil altered it’s inductance at all. I built a similar coil for my 7-Band EFHW and found it significantly changed the tuning.

It did a little, but nothing the KX2 ATU can’t handle. You need an ATU with it.

Scuppered! I have all the parts except the bulkhead BNC connectors - I have them but mine are the wrong gender. Can’t find them on Amazon so a trip to Digikey is probably in order.

Thanks for posting that. Many people will expect miracles so it’s good for the designer to set expectations from the start.

With that in mind, thanks for posting the design. It looks smart and certainly maybe of use for those crowded summits.

Oh, no, really - it’s likely going to be the worst antenna you’ve ever used. But it should keep the radio happy enough, and hopefully you’ll work someone!

Personally, I hold the AX1 in the same space. It’s a huge compromise.

Good point though, these are highly compromised whips. That said though I’ve had some great results using the KH1 telescopic, just as an example.

I like these sorts of antennas, or the verticals such as the JPC PAC-12 which I cut my teeth on for the best part of a year before looking at other options.

Diamond RHM-12, Le Slug Rouge and so on all perform handsomely. Not the same size as an AX-1 I know but I just meant telewhips in general.

I like 'em. Cheeky, handy, quick to set up in a jiff. Chuck it in the ground, on a tripod, on your rad as a handheld. Knock out a few contacts. Disco.

Love a good telescopic.

Side note @M1GEO I got the stl file printed safely. It needs supports on the Bambu P1S. 4th time lucky!

Right, that means it’s not as easy to use with my FT-817 (which has no ATU) but I could try it with my Elecraft T1 ATU. Although that rather defeats the ‘simplicity’ or the idea.

That’s the power of big influencers on YT!
