Thanks both!
GM-land. Ah. Yes. Errm.
Would love to travel around Scotland activating along the way for periods at a time. But Iâm still in full time employment and the distance is just that bit too far for a couple of weekend activations.
But who knows, what always stuck with me were the Pringleâs advert slogan: âOnce you pop you canât stopâ, and I believe it was you son who once told you that SOTA is like PokĂ©mon: âGotta Catch 'em Allâ.

What about activating all SOTA summits in GI, GD, GJ and GU Robert? All these SOTA summits are doable and me and my dad Tom @M1EYP have previously activated all these SOTA summits as well as G and GW.

I really enjoyed reading your report Robert @M0RWX , congratulations on your achievement and all the best for 2024.
Thanks Phil! And thank you for providing a treasure trove of invaluable information for so many summits on your website.
Happy New Year.

Thanks for taking us on the journey of your last activations
Thanks Matthew!
I am finalising my next report of the activations abroad earlier this summer.
Happy New Year!

Congratulations Robert on activating all G and all GW SOTA summits.

What about activating all SOTA summits in GI, GD, GJ and GU Robert?
GD was planned for this summer, but timings didnât work out in the end. So hopefully this will happen in 2024. GI, like GM I hope to visit a few time in 2024.
All the best for 2024!

Congratulations on competing all of G and GW.
Thanks Geoff!
Always a pleasure to speak with you.
All the best for 2024.

Congrats Robert!
Nice report, as well.
Q) Out of all those hills did you have a top one or five?
Thanks Paul!
In England, one of my favourite summits is Loughrigg Fell. I think it was the weather, the hillocks and so many happy people (dog walkers, runners, day trippers) congregating on the summit.
These were my comments on Markâs activation report earlier this year:
G/LD-047 Loughrigg Fell is my favourite summit in England.
Perhaps the weather skewed my opinion when I did visit, but when Loughrigg Tarn came into view, it was like entering a completely different world. The summit has various small âtributaryâ summits and dog walkers, fell runners and photographers arrived from all directions.
A great place to visit - with nice views - and spend a summerâs day at.
Some of my favourites in Wales are GW/NW-011 (Arenig Fawr) and GW/SW-003 - Fan Brycheiniog. There are of course many more.
I prefer a circular walk where possible. Two of my favourites in Wales are:
GW/NW-015 Glasgwm with GW/NW-007 Aran Fawddwy
Starting from the little CP in the valley between both, a great walk.
GW/NW-025 Allt Fawr with GW/NW-016 Moelwyn Mawr
You initially pass Llyn Cwmorthin and then go up passing disused quarries / buildings and old discarded equipment. You can imagine that in times gone past it would have been a flurry of activity.
Then there are some I will only re-visit if the price is rightâŠ
G/SB-005 - Sighty Crag
GW/NW-028 - Creigiau Gleision - aka The Swamp
GW/NW-065 - Gamallt
All the best.

Many thanks for the super report Robert. Many Congratulations on the excellent achievement in such short a timespan and a hearty welcome to the G+GW Club. As Fraser has suggested, GM awaits.
Thanks Gerald.
Fingers crossed weâll have a S2S in GM one day!
Happy New Year.

I look forward to reading it!
Well done Robert, what a great achievement. I really enjoyed the report too, thanks for taking the time to write it all down. Itâs given me some incentive to get out more this year.
My first activation was Carn Fadryn GW/NW-058 and that was quite special in the sun with the sea all around - my wifeâs family have always holidayed on the Llyn and itâs a lovely area.
Congratulations Robert,
Thatâs a great report and a fantastic achievement. I must congratulate you on your planning. I donât think that I have seen so many photographs of Welsh summits on sunny days!
It is always a treat to speak to you. I look forward to speaking soon.

GM. Yes it is far away. Yes there is a huge number of summits. HoweverâŠ
We did our first GM activations after walking the Pennine Way in 2006, bagging three around the village of Kirk Yetholm where the route finishes.
Subsequently, family holidays have taken place in Fort William, along the Moray Coast (access to several lovely small SOTA hills, plus in range of the Cairngorms), Edinburgh and Ayrshire. Slowly the numbers of GM uniques activated started to build.
Then came some tour dates in Scotland with bands/shows I work with, and I try to stick to one activation each day Iâm away - though repeats only of course!
Jimmy and I then had a go at bagging some border summit activations on a day trip from Macclesfield. A long day with meticulous planning needed - but feasible.
Further family holidays have happened in Berwick and in Fife, and more uniques bagged. Nowadays, Jimmy and I do a couple of SOTA holidays to GM each year. I doubt weâll ever get remotely close to doing even half of all the unique GM SOTAs, but weâve already done far more than I ever imagined we would.
Itâs given me some incentive to get out more this year.
Hi James,
Many thanks for the nice words.
Letâs hope youâll be able to go more often.
Looking forward to speaking to you again when Iâm doing the 5 around the Welsh Borders; hopefully in January.
All the best,

Many thanks for the nice comment Kevin.
I must admit that I was very lucky with the weather; I find however that modern cameras accentuate the blue in the sky causing these sometimes overly dramatic pictures. If the image was not bright blue in my report, it was either raining, misty or both.
But as you are starting to be known as the guy who goes out late evening in winter to walk up a hill, rain or snow, putting 80 metres of wire up in the air, I guess you hardly get to see any blue sky.

Thanks Tom for the explanation on activating in Scotland living in England.
For it to be worthwhile living that bit further south, it would have to be long weekend, short trips.
Perhaps a few short holidays like you do with Jimmy. Still working full-time is not helping eitherâŠ
Thanks again.
