This is the dilemma I face: either to use my 4.8m-long RG-58 feeder (PL259 terminated) between the FT817 and the 3-element Yagi with total loss of 1.1 - 1.3 dB or my 6m-long Ultraflex-7 feeder with only ~0.4dB loss on 2m. The extra carrying weight of the latter is not an issue: 185g vs 510g
The choice might seem obvious but the RG-58 cable is flexible enough not to imped the Yagi/pole combination from moving over the 360° when I rotate the base of the pole sitting next to it in my comfy portable chair, whereas the Ultraflex-7 is so rigid it resists the movement.
At present [and in the past] I’ve used two large reusable tie-wraps: first one to strap the feeder to the Yagi boom just behind the PL259/SO239 connection to the driven element (to take the weight off the solder joints inside the feeder’s PL259) and the second tie-wrap around the feeder and support pole (to stop the feeder flapping about in the wind).
I might experiment using the Ultraflex-7 feeder with no second tie-wrap and see if that allows easier rotation of the pole.
