New summit website pages

In reply to M1EYP:

Frontpage! Ugh! That’s akin to a maths teacher using a calculator to add up simple numbers!

Playing them directly from the website probably needs the server to have some permissions etc set. You might also need a playlist link (akin to the m3u files needed to play mp3 files on some servers. You can embed the Youtube applet quite easily which might be the simplest way to go, especially if your server has limited or expensive bandwidth.

Colin G8TMV

Yes, going the YT way!

I like Frontpage. I understand (most of) it.

Somewhat analagously, I learned to program in BASIC when I was 12 (1982). I got moderately good at it and made my own versions of those “Football Manager” games that were popular at the time, and could even do a bit of simple machine code for “Space Invader” type games. One crass bit of programming I did was a stupid little routine for an audio effect called a “motor laser” - which basically rapidly turned the cassette controller motor on and off repeatedly while the “laser” (the space bar) was being pressed. This had the effect of a vibrating purr on the BBC B computers, but on Acorn Electrons it was the most appalling noise that sounded like the keyboard was about to smash!

Anyway, less of the waffle, what about the analogy? Well, in 1984-1986 at school (O Level Computer Studies) our teachers told us BASIC was rubbish and wouldn’t have any application on our adult lives. At University 1989-92, our lecturers told us the same thing, and taught us some other weird languages (I had to do a computing module in the first year of my maths degree).

And now? What is the programming I do in my professional job? Visual Basic, in order to create interactive whiteboard learning resources for maths! All those people who told me that BASIC would be of no use in 25 years - hang your heads in shame!

I’ll keep faith with Frontpage for the same reason

(BTW, yes, I do use calculators to add up simple numbers - I can only do calculus without a calculator).

Typical mathematician!

I can talk…I still miss my circular sliderule!

In reply to G8ADD:
I had a barrel slide rule - an Otis-King if I remember. Always had problems subtracting bar numbers in logs - used to do a longhand approximation and fudge the figures to match. Only a problem if out maths teacher (Mr Dyne) caught me. Ah, happy days

Regards, Dave, G6DTN

What’s a slide rule?

Video content on the Cloud page on my site is now all working - but you might want to crank the volume up!

http://tomread.co.uk

In reply to M1EYP:
Good stuff, nice to see the video.

Next you should introduce them to contesting  Get a “Cloud” contest group going in the summer for Tuesday evenings.

I am the Cloud Contest Group! No, steady on, I’ve finished work by that time on a Tuesday evening. It’s “me time” by that part of the evening!

Now added Days 1 & 2 of the DC-SC camping tour from July/August. Just one new summit page (so far) - Hensbarrow Beacon G/DC-004. But worth a look nonetheless - the photos clearly show the landfill towering above the “summit” in several directions. By how much I’m not sure, but as it’s man-made, it doesn’t matter.

http://tomread.co.uk

Maybe there will come a time when RHB consider the landfill to be sufficiently vegetated and grassed over to be part of the topology and move the summit position accordingly. Until then, it’s the trig point, but the VHF take-off is pretty well hideous - arguably as bad as Kisdon G/NP-026.

Thank goodness for HF and the ionosphere.

Tom M1EYP

More stuff on http://tomread.co.uk

Day 2 of the DC-SC tour is now complete with Carnmenellis G/DC-006 and Watch Croft G/DC-007 added.

Days 3 to 10 are also online. This includes Brown Willy G/DC-002, Kit Hill G/DC-003, High Willhays G/DC-001, Christ Cross G/DC-005, Selworthy Beacon G/SC-005, Beacon Batch G/SC-003, Win Green G/SC-008, Long Knoll G/SC-007, Lewesdon Hill G/SC-009, Hardown Hill G/SC-011, Staple Hill G/SC-004 and Periton Hill G/SC-006.

There is a good selection of photos on the pages, enhanced by the fact that there were three of us regularly taking photos thoughout the holiday.

My highlights on the pages are the photos on DC-001 and DC-002. The High Willhays page also includes a set of photos taken by Jimmy M3EYP and Craig on Yes Tor which they visited while I was activating. Jimmy found the elusive trig point on Christ Cross, and the Long Knoll page contains a “proof positive” video of Liam walking relatively briskly up a steep hill!

The structure should work so that you can start on the first page of the DC-SC tour - Hensbarrow Beacon G/DC-004 - and then move from day to day by clicking the appropriate link near the end of the narrative.

The remaining 6 SOTA activation pages of the DC-SC tour will be added shortly.

Tom M1EYP

Nighttime activation of Dunkery Beacon G/SC-001, and joint activation of Wills Neck G/SC-002 - with Peter G3TJE now added at http://tomread.co.uk

More in the coming days. I’ve only got 18 more activations, 112 remaining photos and 676 activator QSOs to place on the website… Then I’ll post all the links on the SOTAwatch Summit info resource pages.

Tom M1EYP

The DC-SC tour is now complete on my website, with the following four new pages:

G/SC-010 Dundry Down
G/CE-001 Cleeve Hill (meet up with G3MD & G0LGS)
G/CE-003 Bredon Hill (at sunset)
G/CE-002 Walton Hill (late at night)

(We did the three CEs on the way home from the DC-SC mission).

The DC-SC tour now runs all through the 22 activations from Hensbarrow Beacon G/DC-004 to Walton Hill G/CE-002. There is a link from each activation to the next activation of the tour.

G/SP-002 Black Hill, 16th August now added.

http://tomread.co.uk

It is one of those very rare moments when my website is completely up-to-date (as far as SOTA is concerned). It will spare me a bit of nagging from J & L anyway!

http://tomread.co.uk

Pages added/updated are:

Carnedd y Filiast GW/NW-032
Longridge Fell G/SP-014
Moel Gyw GW/NW-053
The Cloud G/SP-013
Moel y Gamelin GW/NW-042
Gun G/SP-013
Cyrn-y-Brain GW/NW-043
Shining Tor G/SP-004

Cringle Moor-Drake Howe G/TW-002
Lambrigg Fell G/LD-046
Bishop Wilton Wold G/TW-004

…plus the Coast 2 Coast Road Trip story, as mentioned.

Hope some folks enjoy the pictures. No doubt my website will be hopelessly out-of-date again before too long! Or as GW7AAV says “If your website is finished, then your life is over…”!

Tom M1EYP

And indeed, http://tomread.co.uk - is way out of date again.

Remedial work has begun today, so you can now see the photos from:

GW/NW-070 Great Orme (walked up from Llandudno pier)
GW/NW-034 Cyrniau Nod (long walk!)
GW/NW-052 Mynydd Cwmcelli
GW/MW-026 Long Mountain-Beacon Ring (including Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway)

Hope it is of some interest to someone. Much more to follow.

Tom M1EYP

Now added the pages for the four days in Cheddar with Jimmy and Liam:

G/SC-003 Beacon Batch (and arrival in Cheddar Gorge)
G/SC-005 Selworthy Beacon (and beach etc at Minehead, and meet up with G3TJE)
G/SC-010 Dundry Down (and Cheddar Gorge caves, museum, gorge-top walk and the amazing Shahnaz restaurant)
G/CE-001 Cleeve Hill (and football)

LOADS of photos!

See http://tomread.co.uk

Tom M1EYP

Now added the photos from International SOTA Weekend (using Royal Wedding MR prefix):

G/LD-008 Blencathra - Hallsfell Top
G/LD-019 High Raise plus 7 other WOTA summits in the Langdale Pikes round
G/LD-023 Knott
G/LD-041 Binsey

G/LD-057 Swinside (rare summit, joint activation with Jimmy MR3EYP & Rick M0RCP)

Lots more soon to be added, but I hope you enjoy these for now.

Go to http://tomread.co.uk and click on ‘SOTA’ for the index.

Tom M1EYP

In reply to M1EYP:
It was of great interest to me Tom, Great to see the day out Daniel and Liam had as well as your SOTA activation reports.

Some good dx on 15m with the 40m dipole, Maybe it is time to build that MM15 while I have some extra hours on my hands.

Sean M0GIA

Excellent. I have all the components ready to go. I will attempt to work alongside you and make an MM10 at the same time. Could replace the feeders on the MM12 and MM17 while we’re at it. I’ll see that you don’t go short of beer during any project work.

Tom M1EYP

Now added the pages for the two day trip to GW/SW and G/WB to do a SOTA talk at the Forest of Dean ARG recently.

New ‘unique’ webpages are:

GW/SW-011 Sugar Loaf
GW/SW-013 Tor y Foel
GW/SW-016 Ysgyryd Fawr
GW/SW-023 Allt yr Esgair
GW/SW-026 Bryn Arw

While another page has been added for G/WB-021 Ruardean Hill for the large group demo activation ahead of my SOTA talk that evening - inside a building that was inside the AZ!

Feel free to check it out at http://tomread.co.uk

Tom M1EYP

OK, my website is up-to-date, in terms of the SOTA pages, at least.

http://tomread.co.uk

Cheers,

Tom M1EYP

Now on with the 2012 pages…
