Yorkshire Dales SOTA weekend

No rushing off to N Wales for a walk on Sunday. I’ll try and squeeze a couple of SOTA calls in from Whernside (prob before the race). My record of combining Raynet and SOTA isn’t great! 1st year nul points, 2nd year stayed up with HF to participate in the trans Pond event. I think most of my contacts were in the opposite direction, must remember to turn the dipole round next time

Hi Guys,

looks like there is quite a bit of interest in this now and I’m just starting to put a plan together. As you know this started off as a club event and has now grown legs so it should be quite busy. The plan is that the some club members are going to be doing the 3 peak challenge on the Sat so will be activating all 3 of the main peaks and there will be a club station on NP-004.

If you would like to join the club members on the 3 peak challenge please let me know as I may try to put on a cooked breakfast before you leave.

The club gazebo will be on site so we can all get together on the Fri/Sat night and don’t forget to order your pizzas!!

Campsite booked. Summit alerted. Roll on :ok_hand:

For those staying on the campsite on the Sat night, what would the interest be if I was to put a BBQ on?

Hey,

I wouldn’t mind tagging along for the 3 peaks challenge. I’m not staying at the campsite as I live local. I’ll just need a meet up point and a time.

Campsite booked, somewhat harder to find a nearby summit without an alert! (I’ve gone for Calf Top G/NP-022) which I plan to activate by walking from Barbon). Looks like a busy weekend fingers crossed for good weather!

Jake, M0PVC is doing the 3 peaks so I’ll find out times etc and let you know. I think he has alerted the first hill at 7.30 so I think that would mean a 6.00 start but I’ll double check and post details on here.

Hi all

I should be able to join in on the Saturday - alerted for G/NP-008

Cheers

Rick

Jake and Gary from Guisborough club will be attempting the 3 peak challenge and hope to be leaving Horton in Ribblesdale at approx 6am if anybody wants to join them. If you can post your name and callsign I will let them know to expect you.

For those that are activating a single summit, is it worth coordinating an hour when we should be on air? It would be nice to QSO with as many other NPers as possible.

(sorry if I missed the memo on this)

In theory its a great idea but it becomes like herding cats.

I’ve been thinking of something like a hybrid model where you may have scheds for those doing quick or multiple activations but for ones that stay on summit longer a different approach.

So long as the weather plays ball, I intend to be on Sharp Haw for between 4 and 5 hours. I will also have muliple radios, so for instance I was going to suggest I leave a Handheld on a 2m antenna (probably a rollup j-pole) sat on something like 144.575 down in the mixed mode section of 2m. That way, anyone arriving on summit can call on that frequency and hopefully I’ll hear them and do the S-T-S exchange probably without breaking stride on whatever band/mode I’m running on. Saves the other activator hunting around and then finding I’m on a band they dont have.

That makes sense. I see a lot of alerts are for 10 or 11 UTC anyway so that should fall into place. I’ll be across the valley so you can wave if you want a S2S. Having a known 2m frequency sounds a good idea.

Hey Mark,

I’m always up for a BBQ, especially after a day on the hills  let us know if we need to pay anything, happy to contribute. Looking forward to this event!

I am keen to join this weekend in the Dales, but I have a commitment keeping at home until around 5pm. I could leave and drive up to the Dales after work, but that would likely mean a late arrival between 9pm and 11pm, depending on how kind the M25 and the M1 are…

There is no way I am going to sensibly arrive and pitch up at the that time, so I want to consider staying in an AirBnB or other similar accommodation. Firstly, I would appreciate any recommendations on cheap hotels or B&Bs that accept late arrivals.

With respect to the weekend, do you know if the Dalesbridge site are happy for visitors to join in the drinking and eating in the evening on the Saturday, without an overnight booking on the site? I would likely book the AirBnB for two nights, but would still be interested in meeting up of the evening if the site would be welcoming. I would go ask the campsite direct, but thought I would check here first, in case anyone has already enquired?

Cheers,

Dave.

I have some bittersweet news regarding my attendance of the Yorkshire Dales SOTA weekend…

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it anymore. Was really looking forward to the Yorkshire Three Peaks on the Saturday, but I’m sure it’ll be equally as fun :raising_hands:

I’ve been fortunate to be selected as RSGB Team Leader for the IARU Region 1 YOTA camp in Wagrain, Austria :austria: I’ve got a team of talented youngsters who will be taking to the airwaves for the week starting Saturday 25th July! Very excited and thankful for this opportunity, and hoping to do Team GB proud :united_kingdom: RSGB News

What on the itinerary has caught my eye the most so far? The Austrian SOTA of course!! Look out for OE/M1TJM/P

Hope everyone enjoys the weekend - I’ll certainly be there for the next one!

I’m sure they will be fine with visitors on the Sat night. I know one of the sites staff so I’ll arrange it with him.
