Yaesu FTX-1F, a new QRP rig! (Part 2)

The 705 does 6, not 4.

Don’t let the 905 fool you, the actual radio is separate from the 705 shaped control head and it’s not portable as you would consider it in SOTA.

In some ways a very similar solution to the FTX-1 if you add a small linear amp. Certainly an option.

My shack (well, the shelves to one side of my desk) can only accommodate a couple of rigs at most, and then only if they’re relatively small. There’s only one shelf that’s actually at a good level for a rig the size of an IC-7300, and one other that will handle something small like a KX-3 but not something as big as the IC-7300. I experimented on the off-chance that I could squeeze an IC-9700 in as well as the IC-7300, but no way. Hence the search for a single shack-in-a-box rig that’s not any much bigger than an IC-7300. So far the obvious options seem to boil down to the FTX-1 (with its PA) and the FT-991A.

The IC-7100 with its remote head could be another contender in the space constrained shack. Definitely not portable though, but neither is the FT-991A.

Yes, 3.2kg to start with :elephant:

This is what you need Andy.

Indeed. I’m primarily after a rig that will fit in my small shack, something with the footprint of an IC-7300 (+/- a little) that will let me use CW (and SSB where necessary) on all bands from top-band to 70cms. For portable use I have a QMX, a KX-3 and an 817 which is a bit beat-up and temperamental but may get pressed into use thanks to the Challenge, unless I can track down one of those small transverters. I wouldn’t rule out taking something like an FTX-1 or IC-705 out occasionally.

I have, however, got a little used to having a pan-adapter in the shack. That kind of function can sometimes be fudged via some computer application or other, up to a point, but that would push the IC-7100 a bit lower down the list… :man_shrugging:
