Yaesu FT-710 AESS

More a question for SOTA Chasers this one - has any CW Operator reading this bought the Yaesu FT-710 (1.8-70 MHZ radio)?

If so I wonder what you think of the CW sidetone? I bought one new a couple of weeks ago after parting company with one of my FT-991As, and spent the proceeds on the FT-710.

Hi Phil,
the sidetone is a little bit rough and hard. Other Transceivers sound smoother.
For me the only point of the FT-710 which is not outstanding…

The receiver data at least seems to keep what is promised …
Have fun!

BTW, ARRL’s Product Review can be found in QST August 2023, p.35-41

My works great. Check risetime. New firmware since 5 July 2023

I agree fully with youir findings Martin. The FT-710 is an excellent performing SDR radio for the price, apart from the clicky and harsh sounding sidetone. I installed the latest July firmware issued last week - no change. Altering the rise time makes no difference to the quality of the audio sidetone on my unit SM7RYR.

Thank you for the link Heinz.

I plan to give ithe FT-710 a run on the two drive on summits we have in the G/TW area when the weather is suitable and I find time. The radio is far to big to hump more than 100m or so, but I didn’t buy it for that!
