Today (25/05), Radioddity opened their Xiegu X6200 page for order placement at €747,48, £636.62 or US$799.00. The expected shipping date is 17th June.
More details and pictures taken from the X6200 production line to be found here: Xiegu X6200 HF Transceiver | Full Mode Full Band | RF Direct Sampling | Replaceable Battery | Built-in ATU | SDR Structure | WFM AIR RX

They have also launched a trade-in program that can give a further discount of up to 70 USD.

Early orders get a free spare battery supplied but Radioddity states that with courier restrictions on the transport of Lithium batteries supply of batteries may only be possible in a second delivery starting from the end of July as they will need to be transported by sea.

I Just looked at the relative pricing of the 5/10w Xiegu “family” at Radioddity (Germany) and saw this:

X-5105 €513.69

X-6100 €509,94

X-6200 €747.61

I’m surprised to see the oldest model, the X-5105 priced above the X-6100.

This is probably a very good time to buy the X-6100 if you don’t need to have the small improvements with the X-6200. (Direct conversion Rx, plastic case (hence lighter and increased WiFi/BT range), Expansion port, removable battery, FT8 decoder (Rx only)).

Here’s a video of unpacking and first hands-on of a late PRE-PRODUCTION sample of the X-6200.

It looks good. If they were to add V/UHF and coverage of the UK and US 60m allocations I would consider it.

That seems quite a lot compared to the older model Xiegu’s, but this new 6200 does appear to have more capabilities of course.

To compare, the Elecraft KX-2 on its own is currently £800 new from the USA. That’s before you add a battery, ATU, microphone. It costs £1275 if you want the ‘shack in a box’ from the USA. Plus £75 delivery. Oh and the £150 import charges (VAT and DHL charge for collecting the VAT). And the wait (currently 4 months+).

The KX-2 with a battery and ATU installed weighs in at 585g, whereas the X6200 seems to be 880g. I can’t find if that includes a battery though, so I’d be interested in seeing what the real weight is of a SOTA-ready X6200.

Will this new X6200 finally push Yaesu into making a 817/818 replacement I wonder…?

If yaesu has any intention of marketing a successor to the very capable 817/818 family then I hope that they have already done their development (which takes time) or they may miss the boat!

Amateur radio items are devoid of import duty.

Weight X6200 according to data sheet is 930 g (without battery) and power consumption in RX 650 mA.
Weight KX2 (without battery) is 430 g and power consumption in RX 125 mA (145 mA Backlit On).

The range of functions of the two transceivers is different and a too quick comparison may therefore not give an objective rating.

The price is another matter, but what I particularly appreciate about Elecraft is the availability of circuit diagrams and the unbureaucratic tech support for troubleshooting, which makes repairs possible even after many years.

Hi Andy,

Having just imported one, in my experience there is a payment to be made. DHL state “These charges are levied by HM Customs & Excise and paid by DHL on your behalf so we can deliver your goods.”

I had to pay DHL in order to release my goods (the KX-2) for delivery to my UK address.

My total charge was:

That’s because I ordered a few other items with the radio, including a few parts for SOTA folk. I assume if it was just the radio the charge would be nearer £150…

Despite this charge, it still worked out cheaper than buying from the Swiss authorised supplier.

It’s not import duty it’s VAT and DHL’s charges for collecting the VAT. There is no import duty on amateur radio equipment.

I stepped on the cracks in the paving in Switzerland once and it cost me 63SFr.

There were rumours some years ago of an FT-791 design (to fit the FT891/991 series) but it, like the 891 was to be MF/HF+6m only - i.e. no 2m or 70cm and after the sales of the FT891 as a supposed replacement for the FT-857 were terrible, the story goes that the 791 development was stopped and the 818ND brought out simply as some major the parts of the 817ND were no longer available.

I personally don’t expect Yaesu to bring out a new portable radio to fill the hole left by the FT817/818 - but I could well be wrong.

Something might get announced at the Tokyo Ham Fair later in the year, maybe, we’ll see.

I can’t find the video now but I seem to remember John Kruk of Yaesu acknowledging there was a gap in their lineup with no portable/mobile shack in the box and to watch this space, however nothing seems to have come of it and all the recent questions about it on their Facebook posts just get a “you can make suggestions via our contact page”.

When the 817 was developed it was a groundbreaking radio that was the only option in the market. That market has changed now and there are lots of options. It might not look that attractive to Yaesu anymore?
