Which bike might be best for SOTA?

Pedalantry? :grinning:

My thought was prompted by Tony’s photo in post 20 of a roach pole affixed to an inverted bike. Actually I remember a summit near Swansea where I had to use the guying kit, but you are right, such summits are not plentiful. Of course, for real summits rather than grassy bumps a bike is going to be less than useful, I can’t imagine anyone cycling up Tryfan or Bidean nam Bian!

Yes bang on Brian. Not particulary useful an E-Bike or even a conventional push bike on the vast majority of summits. Still, I’m really glad that SOTA did not embrace the 100m HUMPS during the controversy over 10 years ago… I bought my Pedalec for riding about the area where I live, but it may come in for SOTA occasionally on some of the typical smoother Forestry Tracks in Scotland or Wales. The big snag with Cycle / Walk for SOTA is wet feet. Not keen on riding any bike with boots on! So you wear a leather or suede type walking shoe, ride as far as you can. Lock the bike and walk the rest of the way. Moorland is often boggy as you know as it was for me on Larriston Fell GM/SS-161. Boots and gaiters were very much needed for the walk acorss the moor and so I activated with cold wet feet and continuing discomfort on the walk and ride back to the car five miles from the summit. I wouldn’t go as far as carrying boots and gaiters on the bike though, but a lightweight pair of ankle boots is probably what one needs.

I routinely reach summits by bike, and sometimes use the bike as a tripod (bike folded, seatpost inverted). Is this allowed?

This one I had rent to activate Eagle Mountains OK/KR in May 2018

This one is mine, I used it in OK/US & DL/BM in October 2020

My take on this is KISS.
Keep it simple, and cheap. Many times I have “abandoned” my bike in at the head of a forest road with only a simple chain and lock to keep it from total loss. Incidentally Andy, taking the saddle with you is another good way to prevent theft.

My only other observation is that, assuming you do not have panniers, keep your rucksack (with heavy radio equipment etc) well fastened at chest and waist to stop it slopping about and unbalancing you. I have twice had a close call in this respect.

Budget stretches to 4k cameras and drones, but doesn’t stretch to an outboard motor…

Must be a rule about not using powered vehicles in that sport too.

Breathtaking video.

He’s a fantastic rider - one of the very best. His videos are always slightly amusing. There is a video showing just how much work he put into that amazing fence crossing at the end. I hope that he does not end his career like Martyn Ashton.

I have just been chatting to my pal Mark on the phone, he bumped into Danny MacAskill today. He was filming on Sgorr Ruadh GM/WS-077 this afternoon. He was doing an uphill section of filming when Mark got in the way, coming down the path.

They had a few minutes chat, really nice guy by all accounts.
