Walking the Minehead three

Wednesday 20th August 2025 - G/SC-001, G/SC-006 & G/SC-005.

This was my second time to activate these three summits near to the town of Minehead in Somerset, South-West England.

I first activated these summits in 2021 when I was still fairly new to SOTA, driving between the three summits. I really enjoyed the trip, and I’ve often thought about a return visit and trying to do a walking loop between all three summits. Which is what I did yesterday!

Parking up at Webber’s Post (SS 90300 43932), I enjoyed a full day of walking in the order of Dunkery Beacon, G/SC-001, Periton Hill, G/SC-006 & Selworthy Beacon, G/SC-005. The weather was overcast, but dry (apart from a few spots of drizzle), and a pleasant temperature for walking. I intended to concentrate on 2m FM with the SW-3B brought along as an hf backup if needed. It was needed for Dunkery Beacon, but I managed to get the required QSOs on 2m on the other two. It was also great to get some S2Ss in the log on the last summit, from @GW6OVD & @GW7RKC on G/WB-004 and @M6BWA & @M0JLA on G/WB-018.

A really enjoyable day out. The loop was around 14 miles long and took me about 9 hours, which included the operating time on the summits. I have uploaded the gpx file to SOTA mapping. I don’t claim that this is the definite route linking all three summits though! There were several alternatives possible.

Thanks for all for the contacts, and see below for some photos.

Nice report & pics, Matthew, though a 14 mile walk sounds a bit of an epic!

I remember Selworthy-back in 1977 Mrs MHF & I had 2 weeks in Allerford nearby.

A nice report and a super walk Matthew. I’m sure that it was very satisfying. I look forward to reading about your next adventure.

I love the palette of your photos. Greens and stony grays and muddy browns all the way. Very calming. Looks like an enjoyable hike!

Thanks John. It’s a lovely part of the world. I did start to tire on the last leg of the loop, but ultimately it felt very satisfying to have made it all on foot.

Thanks Kevin. This walk was partly inspired by some of your recent adventures which I’ve really enjoyed reading about. Realise though that for the full Kevin experience there should have been some buses or trains involved! Next time!

Thanks Robert!

Thanks Adam. It’s a beautiful landscape, and calming is actually a good description of the day. Nothing like a full day of walking in nature to leave all the ups and downs of real life behind!

Great effort! When I did them I did drive to two but managed to walk to Periton Hill G/SC-006 from the Caravan Club site in Minehead - but that was a lot less than 14 miles!

Thanks Gerald. A highly recommended day out for those wanting to combine radio with a decent amount of walking.

Didn’t realise you were in the area Matthew. Looks like a cracking day out, with a fair bit of distance.

RE Dunkery Beacon - some of it is just pot luck isn’t it. Did you speak to G1ONV? You’d have been quite close to his QTH on Selworthy Beacon.

Absolutely! Just had a look at the logs. I didn’t speak to G1ONV. Next time!
