Even though it was a busy weekend for me, I still managed to carve out some time to squeeze in a quick activation on Saturday.
I was also able to claim another 1st time summit activation!
W2/WE-053 - “2070”
“2070” is a small hill top on the south west side of Conesus Lake.
The entire summit / activation zone is on private land. The big challenge I’ve found when this happens is WHO do you contact? I haven’t found an easy way to find a land owner’s name and info and given the choice I’d prefer to not knock on random doors in the middle of the countryside.
However, for 2070, I was in luck! I found there is a small native plant nursery that carved a tiny area out of the woods within the activation zone. Also, to make life even easier they have a website and phone number to call. After a quick phone call on Friday, I was again granted permission to come down and access the activation zone through their property.
I packed the car first thing Saturday morning, however Crimson was not thrilled she wasn’t coming along..
The summit was about 45 mins from my house with beautiful views along the lake.
Once past Conesus Lake, the short climb to the hill top summit began.
Upon arriving at “Amanda’s Garden” I was greeted by the property owners and left to do my thing while they did their final preparations for the coming winter months.
I hiked a few hundred yards into the woods and found a decent spot to set up. The whole area was dense with lots of scrubby trees and new growth, but I was able to make it work just fine.
Since there wasn’t a long hike involved with this activation, I decided to treat myself and bring along a camping chair. This proved to be a smart move, since it was very muddy under the leaf cover.
I spent about an hour activating and was able to log 22 QSO’s with two S2S contacts. I had several familiar chasers on Saturday as well, I love when I hear a familiar callsign come through.
Shout out to - F4WBN, AK5SD, WF4I, K5KHK, KC1MXB, W4JKC, AND WN2G
Overall a fun activation and I’m pumped to be able to bag another first time activation for a summit.
