I’ve been copying VK/ZL with decent signals on 40m SSB this morning via Long Path.
Perhaps it’s time to go up a mountain and activate SOTA on 40m at about that time beaming LP.
Let’s know here in case you make such plans and also how it went regarding DX with the other side of the planet.
Also, a few days ago EA4M, EA2LU and EA7GV, along with other well known EU chasers, managed to chase a JA activator in our morning on 20m.
I also believe things are getting better slowly. The 8h35m contact you refer to may have been grey-line - the time is about right. 1100-1200 UTC short path on 20m is also working quite well over the last couple of weeks.
Our sunrise was at 6h36z today and I copied 1 ZL and 2 or 3 VK making QSOs with a CT station on 7.140 SSB (of course). Very likely they were using high power, so things may well be much tougher for a QRP SOTA activator…
This timing suits me better than the early morning because I’m currently having the 1st of my 6 due chemo sessions and I will soon start experiencing hypersensitivity in my skin when exposed to cold, as I experienced last summer, so only activations around noon with warm temperature, no wind and no sunshine are the ones I can afford for the moment.
It was my pleasure, I searched for you on 14.285 without success, as it was too early for EA-DL on 20m, and I was delighted when I saw your spot on 40m, went to the frequency and found I could copy you quite well, albeit with QSB, as usual. Thanks for the activation and the QSO.
There’s been great openings on 40 & 20 meters around that time lately between ZL & Europe. I haven’t been able to do a successful chase as yet but fingers are crossed.
I made attempt to work with VK from Santa Catalina Island (IOTA NA-066) on 40 m about 3 weeks ago, but was unable to make QSO with VK5MAV. I will try again at 1-2 weeks, and, possibly, will do SOTA. This time will be close to equinox. Usually it is the best time for contacts between Northern and Southern hemispheres.

No tengo idea de cómo llegué hasta aquí pero sorpresa me llevé cuando ví mi propio log…
Acá en JA la mayoría de las activaciones se hacen durante la mañana y algunos un poco pasado el mediodía. O sea, en términos UTC aproximadamente a partir de las 21:00 en verano, y 00:00 en invierno. En mi caso en invierno trato de empezar a las 23:00 para darle la posibilidad a los chasers de obtener doble puntaje si me vuelven a contactar pasadas las 00:00
Como nunca había trabajado europeos en SOTA este año decidí hacer algunas activaciones a la tarde avanzado (hora local 17:00 y si no mal recuerdo UTC 09:00) Para tener algo de luz empecé casi finalizando el mes de Febrero. Así y todo descendia la montaña en plena oscuridad. Por supuesto que son cumbres que activé previamente y practicamente me conozco cada piedra (además de no ser trayectos muy largos, claro está!) El primer chaser EU fue SA4BLM y yo estaba activando JA/HG-193 el 8 de Febrero, realmente llegaba muy fuerte.
Pero la gran sorpresa me la llevé el 15 de Febrero activando JA/HG-269 donde pude contactar con varios de 4 continentes (NA/EU/AS/OC) y lamentablemente se me había escapado un HB9 que estaba en Canarias, sino me volvía a mi casa con 5 continentes trabajados.
Otra activación donde los europeos llegaban muy pero muy bien fue el 15 de Marzo activando JA/HG-039 esa vez las estaciones de España fueron las que más fuerte llegaban.
Si observas mi Log a partir de mediados de Febrero tengo algunas activaciones casi al anochecer y ahí podrás confirmar los horarios para apuntar hacia estas latitudes.
Hay un par más de activadores JA que cada tanto hacen activaciones como para coincidir con los horarios de EU, uno es Mot JP1QEC y Katsu JP3DGT.
No sé si ahora en pleno verano habrán posibilidades. De ser así posiblemente en estos dias repita alguna activación casi al anochecer.

Sunset in eastern VK is currently about 0720-0730Z, so the grey line evaporates soon after that. I’ve been hearing European signals from HA and others much earlier than that on 40m, any time from 0300 onwards on some days.

Primeramente, quiero decir que estoy verdaderamente impresionado por tu mensaje en un español tan perfecto y me pregunto si es porque tienes algún origen relacionado con España o algunos países americanos donde se hable español.
Muchas gracias por toda la información que das sobre las activaciones y los horarios.
Cuando escribí mi mensaje era el mes de marzo y presiento que ahora han cambiado mucho las condiciones de propagación, pero es muy probable que allá por octubre podamos encontrar condiciones muy favorables para DX JA-EU.
Espero que podamos hacer pronto un QSO SOTA y preferiblemente si es S2S.

Firstly, I want to say that I’m really impressed by your message in a so perfect Spanish and I wonder whether it’s due to you having some Spain related ancestor or any of the american countries where Spanish is spoken.
Thank you very much for all the information about the activations and times. When I wrote my message it was the month of March and I have the feel that propagation conditions have changed a lot now, but it’s very likely that we can find very favourable propagation conditions for DX JA-EU over there in October.
I hope we will be able to make a SOTA QSO soon, preferably S2S.

De japonés sólo tengo la ascendencia Nací en Buenos Aires pero ya hace 17 años hice el camino inverso de mi padre.
Con respecto a las condiciones entre Europa y Asia creo que se dan de mejor manera como bien dices a partir de Octubre y hasta aproximadamente Mayo. El problema es que pernoctar durante los meses más fríos no es muy buen negocio. Hasta ahora, para poder contactar con europeos, hice algunas activaciones al anochecer de Japón. Y desmantelar la estación y bajar la montaña en plena oscuridad (más allá que la conozca) es algo riesgoso. Por este motivo durante el mes de Mayo pernocté 2 veces pero lamentablemente no tuve mucha suerte con EU.
Este año tengo planeado pasar la noche en algunos fines de semana en algunas cumbres y realmente estaría genial poder hacer algún S2S con Europa ya que es algo que vengo persiguiendo hace tiempo.
