VIVA! Skeg Vegas.....

Not in Nevada, it is however on the East coast!

With a Caravan booked in Ingoldmells, and a trip over there from the home QTH in Oldham, it was relatively simple to stop by for an activation on the closest thing Lincolnshire can classify as a mountain  the county being somewhat flatter than a pancake is somewhat of a disadvantage to us SOTA activators… Dont worry though, all is not lost! step forward G/TW-005 - Normamby top. a nice drive on summit, with easy access and plenty of places to play radio from the roadside, sporting a rather attractive Radome on stick that is, if im honest its only real feature….

Anyhow with Mrs JWA fast a kip in the Jalopy, I picked a roadside spot with a handy gate for my mast, and a flat topped gate post for my radio!

2M FM and the FT817 were the weapons of choice, but i wasnt holding much hope that the mighty 5W ws going to be enough… and yet again, the little FT817 sliced through the airwaves like a sharpened scythe…. 7 contacts ITL, with Huddersfield, Leeds and down into Nottinghamshire being some great contacts, that more thanm made up for the lack of a view!

With Mrs JWA waking up, and wanting to get back on our way, I packed up and off we went!

Thanks as usual to all the chasers

Well how about that? If you’d had hung around for a few more hours you could having watched me play! I was playing the Butlins 80s Weekender Festival - in Ingoldmells - a Queen set and a Michael Jackson set!

Naturally, I activated Normanby Top G/TW-005 this lunchtime before driving back to Macclesfield. 22 QSOs - 21 on 2m SSB and 1 on 2m FM. Best DX was G0KYS/P in IO80 - 396km.

Well done, I attempted just 2m FM a few weeks back and didn’t get far. Timing wasn’t the greatest but also (I suspect) the cheap rig desense issue. Including not hearing Mark from Leeds calling. I’m going to cycle down in July for another try. 73

Shame to miss you pal, we were home saturday, we did normanby on the way down the saturday before…. but looks like you had a good gig! and well done on the activation pal

I have to admit, i wasnt expecting to do as well as i did, but the mighty FT-817 did the job again!
