Visiting Argentina from the UK for SOTA

I have visited Argentina a couple of times as we have a family member who lives in the “Welsh Patagonia”* area in Chubut Provence, specifically Trevelin.

Both trips were before there were any LU SOTA Associations.

Sue and I are contemplating another visit, possibly in 2025 or 26.

It’s a great opportunity for SOTA as there are summits just a a couple of hours north of where we would be staying in the LUV Association and another couple of hours further on there are accessible ones in the LUY Association. I don’t know if there are any plans to open up more Associations in LU, but there are likely hundreds of qualifying peaks in Chubut alone.

Anyway… my questions are:
Has anyone on here visited Argentina as a UK or European Amateur and operated portable (SOTA or otherwise)?

If so, what did you put on the licence application form about where you would be operating from? It seems to want an address. I can put in my family members address, but am I then limited to fixed site operation?

It appears you don’t need to do anything if you come from some countries.

“Radio amateurs from countries that are signatories to the Inter-American Convention on the International Amateur Radio Permit (IARP), which hold a radio permit issued in their country of origin, do not need to do any prior procedures.”

Is this another route… bearing in mind I’m only UK licensed. Possibly by obtaining a license in another country? I’m guessing maybe not… but the collective mind in here might have an idea.

I could probably find some local Amateur Radio operators around Trevelin who would “sponsor” me if that would help. I’m aware of at least two.

Finally, I could ask the local RSGB equivalent (RCA National Society) but sometimes it pays to have an idea of how to frame your application/question beforehand to ensure the best response!

Yes; it has been done by SQ9FVE who got some support from the association manager on his expedition to Aconcagua:

Heck… I remember reading that report now… I’d forgotten it was by someone from outside Argentina though.

I’ll make contact. Thanks

They will surely give you permission to operate with your callsign.
Of course, you are going to have to be patient since ¨/P¨ as a meaning of ¨Portable¨ does not exist.
For example, if you operate in Chubut it should be like this LU/MW0WML/V
If you operated from the Province of San Juan it would be ¨LU/MW0WML/P¨ since ¨P¨ corresponds to San Juan.
Good luck!
