Please join me on my activation of the rarely activated summit Spitzmauer OE/OO-005 2446m bringing the special call OE20SOTA/p on-air to celebrate 20 years of SOTA in OE.
The towering summit over the valley Stodertal only beaten in elevation by some meters by the neighboring Großer Priel.
I hiked up on a cloudy and rainy afternoon to the mountain hut Prielschutzhaus.
Next day morning the wx was much better for the hike to Klinserscharte and then the via-ferrata Stodersteig (B difficulty). The rock was still a bit wet but it is only 45 min of climbing the via-ferrata so that was okay. Ascent time 3 hours 10min for about 1100 vertical meters. But see for yourself.
Thanks for another very nice video. The summit is now on my to-do-list for next year, the last time I hiked up Spitzmauer was in 2011 (without radio equipment). After such a long time it’s definitely time to visit this mountain again.
You know I realise that the purpose of Via Ferrata is to protect you when you ascend/descend the steep parts. You can only fall so far and your harness has a shock arrester built in. But Via Ferrata is still so far outside my comfort zone I’ll leave it you you and I’ll just watch the nice videos.
Thanks Andy for your feedback.
Falling is not really recommended on a via-ferrata as one can imagine. But the ‘felt’ safety and at least a chance with the shock arrester is a great buff for the mind - hi.
Great to hear. I will keep an eye out on alerts and spots for a potential complete Martin
Temlberg was also very nice but that was propably because of the great wx next day…
Unfortunatly I did not film that day.
Thanks for sharing Joe. I’ve done a few Via Ferratas over the years but not in a long time. I should be in Dolomites next summer and try again some with my older son.
Are they many other Ferratas in this massif? I may add Austria on my (already long) ToDo
What an enticing route and summit! Thanks for the video. There are 8 via ferrata routes in Colorado, but none of them lead to a SOTA summit. You’re very fortunate to have so many in OE-land.
