So the answer is you have to be completely obsessed! I’m actually quite happy with my rate of progress. Even though I’m not gaining many activation points at the moment I’m still getting out, making new antennas and equipment, working DX etc. I have some winter bonus plans for December and then the real fun starts again in January!
The key is to have a target, plan meticulously and turn up each time - which is sometimes difficult when you leave in the dark when it’s raining. Having an understanding family who sometimes come along does help… I would call it focussed and driven rather than obsessed.
Christmas last year I received the Wainwright Pictorial Guides, 4 OS Maps and the wonderful book of The Wainwrights in Colour by Andy Beck and made the decision to activate all summits in LD in 2022. I have 7 2-pointers left to activate in December (taking advantage of the winter bonus) and know where I will park, possible alternative parking as well as routes planned out.
My nearest summit is a one-pointer, 45 minutes drive, so I spend a lot of time in the car listening to audio books but love visiting new locations when I arrive.
As Ben mentioned, the winter bonus works in your favour if you plan well.
